Analysis of Selected Impacts of US Federal Government Policy on Native Americans´s Poverty During the 1970s and 1980s

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na problematiku politiky sebeurčení federální vlády USA vůči původním obyvatelům během 70. let a 80. let 20. století. Cílem je kriticky zhodnotit vybrané socio-ekonomické dopady politiky sebeurčení a zjistit, zda se v důsledku této politiky podařilo dlouhodobě snížit míru chudoby u původních obyvatel. V teoretické části je nejprve charakterizována asimilační politika ukončení federální vlády USA během 40. až 60. let 20. století. Následně je popsán konec asimilační politiky a nástup zcela antagonické federální politiky sebeurčení vůči původním obyvatelům. V závěru teoretické části je shrnut stav klíčových ukazatelů na začátku sledovaného období let 1969–1989. V praktické části je provedena analýza výsledků federální politiky sebeurčení a shrnutí stavu klíčových ukazatelů během sledovaného období. Následně jsou tyto údaje komparační metodou porovnány s výchozími hodnotami ukazatelů před zahájením federální politiky sebeurčení. Na základě komparace dostupných dat dochází k syntéze získaných údajů a falzifikaci stanovené hypotézy ve znění: politika sebeurčení federální vlády USA během 70. let 20. století vedla k následnému dlouhodobému poklesu chudoby původních obyvatel. Veškerá dostupná data hypotézu vyvracejí.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the issue of the US federal government policy of self-determination towards Native Americans during the 1970s and 1980s. The aim is to critically evaluate selected socio-economic impacts of self-determination policy and to find out whether, as a result of this policy, the poverty rate of Native Americans has been reduced in the long term. The theoretical part first characterizes the US federal government assimilation policy of termination during the 1940s and 1960s. Subsequently, the end of assimilation policy and the emergence of a completely antagonistic federal self-determination policy towards Native Americans is described. The conclusion of the theoretical part summarizes the status of key indicators at the beginning of the monitored period in the years 1969–1989. The practical part analyzes the results of federal policy of self-determination and summarizes the status of key indicators during the monitored period. Subsequently, these data are compared by the comparison method with the default values of the indicators before the federal self-determination policy began. Based on a comparison of available data, the obtained data are synthesized and the hypothesis: the US federal government policy of self-determination during the 1970s led to a consequent long-term decline of Native Americans poverty, is falsified. All available data refutes the hypothesis.
