Causes of endangerment and possibilities of in situ and ex situ protection of the two species rhinoceros - Ceratotherium cottoni and Ceratotherium simum

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o příčinách ohrožení a možnostech ochrany dvou afrických druhů nosorožců, nosorožce tuponosého Ceratotherium simum a nosorožce Cottonova Ceratotherium Cottoni. Nedávno došlo ke změnám v taxonomii afrických druhů z čeledi Rhinocerotidae platné od roku 2005, kdy v rodu Ceratotherium vznikly z původně jednoho druhu dva samostatné druhy – nosorožec tuponosý Ceratotherium simum a nosorožec Cottonův Ceratotherium cottoni. První část práce se zabývá příčinami ohrožení těchto dvou druhů nosorožců v Africe. Hlavní příčinou ohrožení je nelegální lov za účelem získání nosorožčího rohu, který mohou pytláci následně prodat na černém trhu. Pytláci jsou motivovaní vysokou poptávkou po nosorožčím rohu, pocházející z jihovýchodu Asie a Středního východu. Za primárního odběratele nosorožčích rohů je považován Vietnam, kde se roh, ale i jiné části těl nosorožců, využívají převážně jako léčivý prostředek v metodách tradiční čínské medicíny a jako afrodiziakum. Odborné studie prozatím neprokázaly léčivé či afrodiziakální účinky nosorožčího rohu. Dále se roh využívá jako řezbářský materiál pro výrobu různých ozdobných předmětů, či jako symbol bohatství. Oproti minulosti, kdy nosorožce lovili spíše jednotlivci, se nyní na nelegálním lovu podílejí velké organizované zločinecké gangy, které mají stále dokonalejší techniku a vybavení. Od roku 2008 do roku 2014 čelili nosorožci v Africe největšímu tlaku ze strany pytláků. Během tohoto období bylo v Jižní Africe usmrceno přes 3 500 nosorožců. V důsledku nelegálního lovu se dostal nosorožec tuponosý na začátku 20. století téměř na hranici vyhynutí, avšak v důsledku velmi účinné ochrany se podařilo jeho populaci postupně navýšit a v současnosti je dokonce nejpočetnějším druhem nosorožce na světě. V roce 2010 bylo odhadováno přes 20 000 nosorožců tuponosých ve volné přírodě. Nosorožec Cottonův stojí dnes oproti předchozímu druhu na hranici vyhubení, neboť na světě zbývají poslední dva žijící jedinci v keňské rezervaci Ol Pejeta. V roce 2018 uhynul poslední samec tohoto druhu Súdán a v Keni žijí poslední dvě samice Nájin a Fatu, z nichž není ani jedna schopna reprodukce. Jedinou nadějí na záchranu tohoto druhu tak zůstává vývoj metod umělého oplodnění in vitro. Pro obnovení populace touto metodou je však potřeba ještě mnoho výzkumů a pokusů na samicích nejbližších příbuzných a početnějších nosorožců tuponosých.  Nosorožce dále ohrožuje trofejní lov, který je v Jižní Africe legální. Lovci však mohou roh jako trofej vyvézt jen s povolením CITES v omezeném množství a pouze pro svou vlastní potřebu. Trofejní lov byl však mezi lety 2003-2012 zneužíván tzv. „pseudolovci“ z Vietnamu, kteří tohoto povolení pro vývoz rohu jako trofeje zneužívali. Kvůli neustálému zneužívání trofejního lovu a sporné legalitě bylo v roce 2012 povolení k lovu všem vietnamským lovcům zrušeno.Druhá část práce se zabývá možnostmi ochrany nosorožců in situ a ex situ. Projektů na ochranu nosorožců je na světe realizováno velké množství, což svědčí o velkém zájmu o tuto problematiku ze strany odborníků na celém světě. Nejznámějšími organizacemi, jsou například: World Wide Fund for Nature, IUCN Species Survival Commission, South African Development Community, African Rhino Specialist Group, CITES, TRAFFIC, atd. Již v roce 1977 byly všechny africké druhy nosorožců zařazeny do CITES I. Protože se podařilo navýšit počty nosorožce tuponosého, byl v roce 1994 přeřazen do CITES II. blém jen krátkodobě. Příkladem může být znehodnocení rohů či odstraňování rohů u živých nosorožců. Jako efektivní se v minulosti osvědčily přesuny nosorožců buď z divokých populací, nebo z populací chovaných v lidské péči. Ochrana ex situ spočívá prioritně v záchranných chovech nosorožců v zoologických zahradách a dalších odborných institucích. Na světě existuje celkem 152 institucí, které chovají nosorožce tuponosé. K roku 2017 bylo v těchto institucích chováno celkem 603 jedinců tohoto druhu. V České republice je špičkou v chovu nosorožců ZOO Dvůr Králové, která jako jediná dokázala úspěšně odchovávat více druhů afrických i asijských nosorožců, včetně již zmiňovaného nosorožce Cottonova. Tato zahrada v roce 2009 realizovala projekt Poslední šance na přežití, kdy byli převezeni čtyři nosorožci Cottonovi do rezervace Ol Pejeta v Keni v naději, že se v přirozených podmínkách podaří tato zvířata rozmnožit. Přestože se jedinci v novém prostředí pářili, k zabřeznutí bohužel nikdy nedošlo.Pro budoucí přežití druhů je však obecně platná zásada, že ochrana je efektivní pouze tehdy, podaří-li se dlouhodobě chránit zejména volně žijící populace jednotlivých taxonů a účinně působit na vzdělávání zejména místních obyvatel formou jistých benefitů a podpůrných opatření.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the causes of threats and the possibilities of protecting two African rhinoceros species - the Ceratotherium simum rhinoceros and Cotton's Ceratotherium Cottoni rhinoceros. There have been recent changes in the taxonomy of the African species of Rhinocerotidae, valid since 2005, wherein two separate species were created from the one original species of Ceratotherium genus, i.e. the Ceratotherium simum rhinoceros and Cotton's Ceratotherium Cottoni rhinoceros.The first part of the thesis deals with what caused these two species of rhinoceroses in Africa to become endangered. The main cause of the threat to them is illegal hunting in order to obtain rhinoceros horns, which poachers can subsequently sell on the black market. Poachers are motivated by the high demand for the rhinoceros horn originating from Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Vietnam is considered the primary buyer of rhinoceros horns, where the horn and other parts of the rhinoceros bodies are primarily used as a remedy in traditional Chinese medicine, and as an aphrodisiac. Professional studies have not yet proven the healing or aphrodisiac effects of the rhinoceros horn. In addition, the horn is used as a carving material for the production of various decorative objects or as a symbol of wealth. Compared to the past, when rhinoceroses tended to be hunted by individuals, large organized criminal gangs are now engaged in illegal hunting with increasingly advanced techniques and equipment. From 2008 to 2014, rhinoceroses in Africa faced the greatest pressure from poachers. During this period, over 3,500 rhinoceroses were killed in South Africa. As a result of the illegal hunting, the White Rhinoceros almost became extinct at the beginning of the 20th century, but thanks to very effective protection, its population has been gradually increased and it is currently the most numerous species of rhinoceros in the world. In 2010, it was estimated that there were over 20,000 White rhinoceroses in the wild. Compared to the previous species, Cotton’s Rhinoceros is nowadays on the verge of extinction, as the last two living rhinoceroses in the world remain in the Ol Pejeta reserve in Kenya. In 2018, Súdán, the last male of this species died, and the last two females, Nájin and Fatu, live in Kenya, neither of which is capable of reproduction. The only hope for protecting this species is the development of in vitro artificial fertilization methods. However, restoration of the population via this method still requires a lot of research and experiments on the females of the closest relatives and the more numerous White rhinoceros.  Rhinoceroses are also threatened by trophy hunting, which is legal in South Africa. However, hunters can only export horns as trophies with CITES authorization in limited quantities and only for their own purposes. Trophy hunting, however, was abused from 2003 to 2012 by so-called “pseudo-hunters” from Vietnam who abused the permits for their export. Due to trophy hunting abuses and controversial legality, all of the permits of Vietnamese hunters were abolished in 2012.The second part of the thesis deals with possibilities of protecting rhinoceroses in situ and ex situ. Projects for the protection of rhinoceroses are being carried out worldwide on a large scale, indicating a great interest of experts around the world in this issue. The most well-known organizations are, for example, the World Wide Fund for Nature, the IUCN Species Survival Commission, the South African Development Community, the African Rhino Specialist Group, CITES, TRAFFIC, etc. All of the African rhinoceros species were already included in CITES I in 1977. Due to the fact that the renewal of the White rhinoceros population was successful, it was moved to CITES II in 1994. removal of horns on living rhinoceroses. On the other hand, effective measures included the active transfers of the rhinoceroses either from wild populations or from populations reared in human care. Ex situ protection primarily consists of rhinoceros preservation in zoos and other specialist institutions. There are a total of 152 institutions in the world that keep White Rhinoceroses. As of 2017, 603 individuals of this species were kept in these institutions. In the Czech Republic, the Dvůr Králové ZOO is the leading institution that breeds rhinoceroses, and it is the only institution that has been able to successfully breed more species of African and Asian rhinoceroses, including the aforementioned Cotton’s Rhinoceros. In 2009, this zoo implemented the Last Chance for Survival project, as part of which four Cotton’s Rhinoceroses were transported to the Ol Pejet reserve in Kenya in the hope that these animals would be able to proliferate in natural conditions. Even though the individuals mated in the new environment, it unfortunately never resulted in pregnancy.However, for the future survival of the species, the general principle applies that protection is effective only if it is possible to protect mainly the wild populations of particular taxa over the long term and effectively educate the local population in the form of certain benefits and supportive measures.
