Changes in relationships with parents during adolescence

Abstract:

Předmětem práce byly proměny vztahů s rodiči v období adolescence. V rámci proměn jsem se zaměřila na vztahy s rodiči a vrstevníky z pohledu citové vazby. Výzkumné otázky a hypotézy byly formulovány s cílem odhalit, jak se liší forma vztahu adolescentů s vrstevníky v závislosti na typu citové vazby s rodiči. Jedna z hypotéz byla potvrzena v celém rozsahu, druhá částečně. Adolescenti s jistým typem citové vazby s rodiči formují vztahy s vrstevníky charakteristické nižší mírou rejekce než adolescenti s nejistou citovou vazbou distancovanou i zauzlenou. Co se týká akceptace, statisticky významný rozdíl se projevil pouze mezi vazbou jistou a vazbou nejistou distancovanou. Vztahy adolescentů s jitým typem citové vazby s rodiči jsou charakteristické vyšší mírou akceptace s vrstevníky než vztahy adolescentů s nejistou vazbou distancovanou. Stejná tendence je patrná i při srovnání jedinců s nejistou vazbou zauzlenou, ale rozdíl není signifikantní. Výsledky naznačují tendenci adolescentů formovat s vrstevníky stejný typ vazby jako s rodiči, z důvodu neprokázané významnosti některých vztahů by však bylo potřeba dalšího ověření. Zdá se ale, že výsledky odpovídají kontinuitnímu modelu vývoje citové vazby. Je však možné, že jedinci s nejistým typem vazby s rodiči uspokojují svou potřebu bezpečí v rámci jiných vztahů než vrstevnických, např. ve vztahu s romantickým partnerem, jiným dospělým či jiným členem rodiny. Tyto vztahy nebyly předmětem výzkumu.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with changes of relationships with parents during adolescence. Within these changes, I focused on relationships with parents and peers with regards to attachment. The research questions and hypotheses have been formed in order to reveal how the form of relationship with peers differs depending on the type of attachment with parents. One of the hypotheses has been fully confirmed, one partly. Adolescents with secure attachment to parents form types of relationships with peers which are characterized by lower level of rejection than adolescents with insecure attachment to parents, both dismissing and preoccupied. As to acceptance, a significant difference has been shown only between secure and insecure dismissing attachment. Relationships of adolescents with secure type of attachment with parents are characterized by higher level of acceptance than relationships of adolescents with insecure dismissing attachment. The same trend can be seen when comparing the individuals with insecure preoccupied attachment but the difference is not significant. The results suggest a tendency of adolescents to form the same type of attachment with peers as they do with parents, considering the insignificance of some relations further testing would be necessary. However, the results seem to support the continuity model of attachment. But it is also possible that individuals with insecure attachment to their parents satisfy their need of security within other relationships, for instance relationship with a romantic partner, another adult or another member of the family. These relationships were not the subject of this research.
