The city from the perspective of disadvantaged groups

Abstract:

Tato teoreticko-aplikační práce se zabývá zkoumáním znevýhodněné skupiny lidí a jejich pohledu na město, ve kterém žijí. Konkrétně píšu o seniorech a seniorském společenském životě ve městě Ostrava. První část se soustředí na charakteristiku samotných seniorů. Jsou zde vymezeny pojmy senior a stáří, jsou popsány odlišné typy osobnosti seniorů dle empirických výzkumů a také to, jakým způsobem se jiné typy adaptují na proces stárnutí, a v neposlední řadě je vylíčen vztah stárnutí k městskému prostoru. Touto kapitolou se podkládá vytvoření obrázku o obecné kvalitě života seniorů a hlavních faktorů, které tuto kvalitu mohou ovlivnit. Druhá kapitola blíže popisující město Ostrava vymezuje konkrétní možnosti společenských aktivit i seberealizace, které zde jsou seniorům dostupné, v rámci kultury, sportu, ale i stravování či dalšího vzdělávání. Třetí a zároveň poslední kapitola teoretické části je pak již zaměřena na samotné organizace působící v Ostravě, které se společenským životem seniorů zabývají. Právě zde jsou na teoretické úrovni prozkoumány rozdíly mezi cíli a činnostmi jednotlivých organizací, přičemž lze sledovat zásadní odlišnosti v tom, jak konkrétně život seniorů reálně ovlivňují. V aplikační části analyzuji dvě z výše zmíněných organizací pomocí kazuistik, a to přes jednotlivé body: členové, cíle, činnosti a aktivity. Touto analýzou a souběžným srovnáním s teorií jsou učiněny poznatky o odlišnostech ve vnímání seniorů městem, a naopak mezi těmi, kteří si udržují a obohacují svůj společenský život tradičními způsoby, a těmi, kteří se zaměřují primárně na další vzdělávání a sebezdokonalování. Také je zjištěno, v jakém směru ovlivňují vztahy mezi seniory a ostatními komunitami.

Abstract:

This theoretical-application work deals with examining disadvantaged groups of people and their views on the city they live in. Specifically I write about the elderly and their social life in the city of Ostrava. The first part focuses on characterising the elderly themselves. It defines the concepts of elderly and old age, it describes different personality types of the elderly in accordance with empirical research and also the ways these different types adapt to the process of aging, and last but not least it depicts the relationship between aging and the urban space. This chapter underlays the creation of an image of the general quality of life of the elderly and the main factors that can influence this quality. The second chapter, which more closely describes the city of Ostrava, defines the specific options of social activities as well as self-realization that are available to the elderly in terms of culture and sports but also eating or further education. The third and final chapter of the theoretical part is then focused on the actual organizations operating in Ostrava which deal with the social life of the elderly. It's here where the differences between the goals and activites of individual organizations are explored on a theoretical level, wherein major distinctions in how they realistically specifically affect the lives of the elderly can be observed. In the application part I analyze two of the above mentioned organizations using case reports through these individual points: members, goals, operations and activites. Via this analysis with a simultaneous comparison with the theory, we can gain knowledge of the difference in how the elderly observe the city and vice versa between those who maintain and enrich their social lives through traditional means, and those who primarily focus on further education and self-improvement. It is also found in what way they influence the relationships between the elderly and the other communities.
