Representation of the main female characters in the Snow White film fairytales from 1937 and 2012

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou reprezentace hlavních ženských postav ve filmech o Sněhurce z roku 1937 a 2012. Cílem práce je pomocí kvalitativní metody diskurzivní analýzy vypovědět o způsobu, možných příčinách a důvodech určitých reprezentací žen ve Sněhurce a sedmi trpaslících a Sněhurce a lovci. V analýze jsem přitom vycházela ze sedmi oblastí reality Jamese Paula Geeho. Zjištění z výzkumu nám ukazují, že se reprezentace Sněhurky změnila. Ve 30. letech byla zobrazovaná jako pasivní hospodyňka, což by odpovídalo společnosti dané doby, kdy si muži nepřáli, aby ženy chodily do práce, nýbrž chtěli, aby zůstávaly doma a staraly se o děti. V remaku z roku 2012 je už však Sněhurka vyobrazována jako aktivní a statečná bojovnice, která na rozdíl od animované princezny dává přednost kariéře před manželstvím, což nám naznačuje, že se reprezentace ženských hlavních postav v pohádkách posouvá k větší emancipaci. V obou filmech je však přitom zdůrazňovaná krása ženy, která je kladena na roveň dobrým vlastnostem u postav Sněhurky a zároveň je negativně zobrazována přehnaná starost o svůj vzhled (u královen). To by nám naznačovalo, že krása jako jeden z mála ženských atributů zůstává u reprezentace žen v pohádkách konstantní. Animovaná i hraná královna jsou zobrazovány jako zlé, ješitné a mocné ženy. Hraná královna však již není vyobrazována černobíle, je také emotivnější a pochybuje o správnosti svého jednání, díky čemuž se s ní diváci mohou zčásti ztotožnit. To nám naznačuje, že se reprezentace záporných ženských postav posunula k realističtějšímu zobrazení.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the representation of the main female characters in the films about Snow White from 1937 and 2012. The aim of the thesis is to use a qualitative method of discursive analysis to tell us about the way, possible causes and reasons of certain representations of women in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Snow White and the Huntsman. I based my analysis on seven areas of James Paul Gee's reality. Research findings show that Snow White's representation has changed. In the 1930s, she was portrayed as a passive housewife, which would correspond with the society of the time, when men did not want women to go to work, but they wanted them to stay at home and take care of children. In the 2012 remake, however, Snow White is already portrayed as an active and brave warrior who, unlike the animated princess, prefers her career over marriage, which suggests that the representation of female main characters in fairy tales is moving towards greater emancipation. In both films, however, the beauty of a woman is emphasized, which is equated with the good qualities of the characters of Snow White, and at the same time the exaggerated concern (of the queens) about appearance is negatively depicted. This would suggest to us that beauty, as one of the few female attributes, remains constant in the representation of women in fairy tales. The animated and played queens are portrayed as evil, vain and powerful women. However, the played queen is no longer depicted in black and white, she is also more emotional and doubts the correctness of her actions, thanks to which the audience can partially identify with her. This suggests that the representation of negative female characters has shifted to a more realistic portrayal.
