Fifty-year history of The Jára Cimrman Theater

Abstract:

Diplomová práce mapuje více než padesátiletou historii Divadla Járy Cimrmana – od zrození fiktivní postavy nedoceněného českého génia Járy Cimrmana v závěru šedesátých let minulého století až do současnosti. Speciální pozornost je věnována sedmdesátým a osmdesátým letům, během nichž divadlo balancovalo na hraně zákazu, bylo nuceno střídat domovské scény a také stahovat hry z repertoáru. Práce se zaměřuje na problematiku jednotlivých her, osobností, které souborem prošly, ale akcentuje zejména znemožňování činnosti této scény tehdejším režimem. Opomenuta nicméně nezůstává ani porevoluční éra a způsob tvorby Zdeňka Svěráka a Ladislava Smoljaka, stěžejních osobností divadla, ve svobodné společnosti. Práce vznikla především na bázi orální historie díky vzpomínkám členů divadla, které mi poskytli během často několikahodinových rozhovorů. Využita je ale i řada archivních pramenů a literatury.

Abstract:

The present thesis describes more than a fifty-year history of the Jara Cimrman´s Theatre – from the birth of the fictional and underrated Czech genius at the end of 1960s to the pre-sent. The main focus is on 1970s and 1980s, in which the Theatre was about to be closed. Moreover, at that time the Theatre was forced to be shifted and to withdraw its plays from the repertoire. Not only does the thesis emphasize the importance of the particular plays and the people involved, it also stresses the prohibition on performing announced by the former regime. However, the post-communist era and the production done by Zdeněk Svěrák and Ladislav Smoljak, the founding fathers of the Theatre, in a democratic society should not be overlooked as well. This work was originated and based on oral history of the members of the Theatre which was collected during several interviews. Besides, a number of archival materials and literature were used.
