Pros and Cons of Sheltered Housing for People with Mental Disabilities

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá chráněným bydlením a jejím hlavním cílem je poukázat na pozitiva, případně negativa tohoto typu sociální služby. V teoretické části práce objasňuji základní terminologii a to konkrétně vymezením pojmu mentální retardace, její etiologií a klasifikací. Práce podává stručný přehled historického vývoje ústavní péče a dále se zabývá historií vzniku chráněného bydlení na území ČR a ve světě a dále podává bližší specifikace samotné služby. V práci je zdůrazněn a popsán proces deinstitucionalizace a normalizace služeb péče o lidi s mentálním postižením. V praktické části bakalářské práce je proveden kvalitativní výzkum, ve kterém jsou na základě rozhovorů s jednotlivými uživateli služby chráněného bydlení vytvořeny kazuistiky těchto uživatelů. Za účelem zvýšení kvality výzkumu a zmenšení rizika subjektivity byl výzkum proveden ve třech zařízeních tohoto typu. Rozhovory byly koncipovány na základě principů normalizace (normální rytmus života, normalizace prostředí a normální způsob naplňování potřeb) a měly za cíl zjistit naplnění, či nenaplnění těchto principů. Konkrétně byl v bakalářské práci zkoumán rytmus dne uživatele a to, jestli se u něj střídá souvislá doba práce a doba volna, jestli uživatel tráví svůj volný čas i mimo zařízení chráněného bydlení, dále zda v konkrétních veřejných institucích a zařízeních naplňuje klient své potřeby. Posledním zkoumaným kritériem bylo průzkum, zda má uživatel i jiné sociální vazby kromě osob, které jsou součástí chráněného bydlení.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis investigates sheltered housing, and its primary goal is to point out the pros and cons of this type of social service. In the theoretical part, the thesis clarifies basic terminology, specifically by defining the term mental disabilities, its etiology and classification. The thesis offers a brief overview of the historical development of institutional care, and treats the history of the rise of sheltered housing in the Czech Republic and the world; it also provides further details about the service itself. The thesis emphasizes and describes the process of deinstitutionalization and the normalization of services caring for people with mental disabilities.In the practical part of the bachelor’s thesis, qualitative research is conducted in which the casuistries of the individual users of the sheltered housing service are created on the basis of interviews. In order to improve the quality of the research and minimize the risk of subjectivity, the research was carried out at three facilities of this type. The interviews were conceived on the basis of the principles of normalization (normal life rhythm, environment normalization, and a normal method of fulfilling needs), with the goal of determining whether these principles were met or not. Specifically, the bachelor’s thesis investigates the rhythm of the user’s daily life, including whether periods of continuous work alternate with periods of free time, whether users spend free time outside the sheltered housing facility, and whether clients needs are met at specific public institutions and facilities. The final researched criteria investigates whether users have social ties beyond those people who are part of the sheltered housing.
