Duopoly model with choice of selling price and seller's location

Abstract:

Harold Hotelling se ve svém článku „Stability in Competition“ z roku 1929 věnoval modelové situaci dvou oligopolistů, kteří si konkurují umístěním svých prodejen a cenami. Hotelling dospěl k tomu, že bude docházet ke shlukování poboček obou prodejců okolo středu uvažovaného trhu (úsečky) a prodejní ceny obou poboček pak budou v takové situaci stejné. Později se ukázalo, že Hotellingův závěr není zcela přesný, protože celý problém uvažuje jako jednorázovou lokační hru s následnou cenovou podhrou - neuvažuje následné reakce konkurenčního prodejce. Cílem této práce je navázat na původní koncepci Hotellinga a po sestavení vlastního modelu duopolu zjistit, zda takováto hra může mít rovnovážnou kombinaci strategií, popřípadě detailněji popsat situaci na onom modelovaném trhu. Prodejci přitom mají možnost v neomezeně opakováních měnit svou vlastní cenu i lokaci.

Abstract:

Harold Hotelling, in his 1929 article "Stability in Competition", modelled the situation of two oligopolists competing on store location and prices. Hotelling concluded that there would be a clustering of the oligopolists around the centre of the market (the line segment) and that the selling prices of the two oligopolists would be the same in that situation. It later turned out that Hotelling's conclusion was not entirely accurate, because he considers the whole problem as a one-shot location game with a subsequent price subgame - he does not consider the subsequent reactions of the competing oligopolist. The aim of this thesis is to build on Hotelling's original concept and, after constructing our own model of the duopoly, to see whether such a game can have an equilibrium combination of strategies, or to describe the situation in the modelled market in more detail. Assume, sellers have the possibility to change their own price and location in unlimited repetitions.
