Stage design concept of adaptation of the classical film by Luis Buñuel: The Exterminating Angel

Abstract:

Magisterská práce je rozdělena na dvě kapitoly. V teoretické části se zaobírám životem Luise Buñuela a jeho tvorbou ve spojitosti s dějinami doby, ve které tvořil. Analyzuji režisérův vztah k církvi a vládnoucím vrstvám společnosti a naznačuji změnu jeho tvůrčího postoje v průběhu jeho života. Soustřeďuji se na tvorbu, filosofii, morální a politický kontext tvorby francouzské surrealistické skupiny a srovnávám ji s činností české meziválečné a poválečné avantgardy. Zvláště se zaobírám surrealistickým pojetím revoluce a pojmenovávám problémy, kterým ve své době avantgardní umělci čelili. Jako přípravu praktické části srovnávám tři filmy Luise Buñuela: Zlatý věk, Nenápadný půvab buržoazie a Anděla zkázy. Poslední jmenovaný podrobně rozebírám z dramaturgického a výtvarného hlediska se zvláštním přihlédnutím na ranou tvorbu režiséra v rámci surrealistické skupiny. V praktické části práce popisuji proces vzniku mé koncepce, vysvětluji motivaci pro tuto tvorbu a popisuji výtvarné řešení scény a částečné řešení kostýmní výpravy. Dokládám řešení jednotlivých dramatických situací a ilustruji jejich podobu bohatou obrazovou přílohou.

Abstract:

Master’s thesis is divided into two chapters. Theoretical part is about the general life of Luis Buñuel and his professional career influenced by historical events of the period in which he actively worked. I analyze the director’s relationship to religion and the ruling classes of society and I imply changes of his attitude during his life. I focus on work, philosophy, moral and political context of art production of the French surrealist group. Following is comparison with activity of Czech interwar and postwar avant-garde groups. I highlight the concept of surrealist revolution and emphasize problems, which avant-garde artists had to deal with. As a foundation for my further work, I compare three films by Luis Buñuel: The Golden Age, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel. Following is a visual and a dramaturgy breakdown of the last named movie, with consideration of the early surrealist period of the author’s life. In the practical part of the thesis, there is a description of the creation of my concept, motivation to adapt this particular original script and breakdown of stage design as well as an outline of costume concept. In the end, I demonstrate solution of each dramatic situation and illustrate it with a variety of attached images.
