Harmonic maps in geometry and physics

Abstract:

Harmonická zobrazení jsou velmi obecný pojem ve variačním počtu a Riemannovské geometrii. Díky svojí obecnosti mají široké využití ve fyzice, ve které se označují jako sigma modely. V práci studujeme harmonická zobrazení jak z geometrického tak z fyzikálního pohledu. Používáme formalismu variačního počtu na fibrovaných varietách a zavedeme obecnou a jednotkou matematickou teorii harmonických zobrazení s konkretními příklady. Dále uvádíme mnoho fyzikálních využití, zejména v teorii strun, sigma modelech, Yang-Millsově teorii a obecné relativitě. Vlastnosti harmonických zobrazení je činí velmi užitečnými při popisu speciálních řešení tzv. instantonů a solitonů, které se objevují v mnoha fyzikálních teoriích. Harmonická zobrazení spojují geometrii s mnoha fyzikálními teoriemi do jednoho teoretického rámce. Hlavním těžištěm práce je variační analýza geodetických zobrazení a jejich vztah k zobrazením harmonickým. Dosažené výsledky umožňují zobecnění pojmu harmonických zobrazení do variet s afinní konexí.

Abstract:

Harmonic maps are a very general notion in the theory of calculus of variations and Riemannian geometry, they enjoy a variety of physical applications under the name sigma models. We study harmonic maps from both the geometrical and physical point of view. We use the calculus of variations on fibre bundles as mathematical formalism and derive a general mathematical theory of harmonic maps with examples. We describe many physical applications of harmonic maps, namely in string theory, sigma models, Yang-Mills theory and general relativity. Due to their geometrical properties, harmonic maps turn out to be very useful in the description of special solutions called instantons and solitons which are present in many physical theories. Overall harmonic maps serve as a bridge between geometry and physics and connect many distinct physical theories. The core of the thesis is in a variational analysis of geodesic mappings and their relations to harmonic maps. The results obtained make it possible to generalize the notion of harmonic maps to manifolds with affine connections.
