Variation in the coffee lexicon with a special focus on the coffee producers in America

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the lexical variation used by coffee producers in Latin America. The aim is to examine and document the specific linguistic repertoire of coffee producers in selected Latin American countries through a self-developed questionnaire. The research focuses on capturing the current state and diversity of the specialized language used in coffee cultivation, including an analysis of the geographical and dialectological aspects of this language. The work is divided into five main chapters. The first chapter provides a historical overview of coffee cultivation in Latin America and its significance for the current economy and society. The second chapter addresses the theoretical concepts of lexicography, dialectology, and specialized language. The third chapter describes the research methodology, including the selection of informants and the creation of the questionnaire. The fourth chapter analyzes the results of the questionnaire, and the final chapter presents a glossary of terms along with comments on selected lexical items. The results show significant variability in the lexicon between different regions and countries. A total of 330 different terms were identified, which vary not only between regions but also among respondents within the same area. Many terms are influenced by local cultural and social factors. This work provides a valuable overview of lexical variability in the field of coffee cultivation and offers a foundation for further research in this area. The resulting glossary and linguistic maps can be useful tools not only for academic research but also for professionals in the coffee industry. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of specialized language and its variations, which can support more effective communication and collaboration among coffee professionals in Latin America.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá variací lexika používaného producenty kávy v Latinské Americe. Cílem je zkoumat a dokumentovat specifický jazykový repertoár kávových producentů ve vybraných zemích Latinské Ameriky prostřednictvím vlastního dotazníku. Výzkum se zaměřuje na zachycení aktuálního stavu a rozmanitosti jazyka používaného v oblasti pěstování kávy, což zahrnuje analýzu geografických a dialektologických aspektů tohoto jazyka. Práce je rozdělena do pěti hlavních kapitol. První kapitola poskytuje historický přehled pěstování kávy v Latinské Americe a jeho význam pro současnou ekonomiku a společnost. Druhá kapitola se věnuje teoretickým konceptům lexikografie, dialektologie a odborného jazyka. Třetí kapitola popisuje metodiku výzkumu, včetně výběru informantů a tvorby dotazníku. Ve čtvrté kapitole jsou analyzovány výsledky dotazníku a v poslední kapitole je prezentován glosář termínů spolu s komentáři k vybraným lexikálním položkám. Výsledky ukazují značnou variabilitu lexika mezi různými regiony a zeměmi. Bylo zjištěno celkem 330 různých termínů, které se liší nejen mezi jednotlivými regiony, ale i mezi respondenty v rámci jedné oblasti. Mnohé termíny jsou ovlivněny místními kulturními a sociálními faktory. Tato práce přináší cenný přehled o lexikální variabilitě v oblasti pěstování kávy a poskytuje základ pro další výzkum v tomto oboru. Výsledný glosář a mapa lingvistických jevů mohou být užitečným nástrojem nejen pro akademický výzkum, ale také pro profesionály působící v kávovém průmyslu. Studie přispívá k hlubšímu porozumění odbornému jazyku a jeho variacím, což může podpořit efektivnější komunikaci a spolupráci mezi producenty kávy v Latinské Americe.
