The Relation Between Some Personality Characteristics of Pupils/Students and Their Learning Styles

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem mezi osobnostními charakteristikami a faktory stylů učení u středoškoláků. Dílčím cílem dále bylo potvrdit mezipohlavní rozdíly ve stylech učení. K diagnostice osobnostních charakteristik byl použit Eysenckův osobnostní dotazník (EPQ-R), faktory stylů učení byly zkoumány pomocí upravené české verze dotazníku Learning Style Inventory (LSI), který sestavili Rita Dunn, Kenneth Dunn a Gary E. Price. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo celkem 199 respondentů - studentů a studentek čtyřletého studia všeobecně zaměřeného gymnázia - z toho 138 dívek a 61 chlapců. Zastoupeny byly všechny věkové skupiny středoškoláků. Byla provedena korelační analýza neuroticismu, psychoticismu a extraverze s jednotlivými faktory stylů učení; pro určení mezipohlavních rozdílů ve stylech učení jsme použili Mann-Whitneyův U test. Zjistili jsme, že vztah mezi Eysenckovými osobnostními dimenzemi a styly učení sice existuje, ale není příliš významný a je značně závislý na pohlaví. Mezipohlavní rozdíly ve stylech učení jsme částečně prokázali, ovšem opět nikterak významné. Proto se domníváme, že vztah osobnosti a stylů učení je vysoce individuální a nelze jej zobecňovat. Styly učení jsou také natolik interindividuálně odlišné, že u nich mezipohlavní rozdíly ztrácí na významu.

Abstract:

This diploma work deals with the relation between personality characteristics and the components of learning styles by secondary school students. The partial goal of the work was to validate the differences between boys and girls in their learning styles. We applied the Eysenck´s Personality Questionairre (EPQ-R) to determine personality characteristics; learning styles were explored by means of the adapted Czech version of the Learning Style Inventory (LSI), which was framed by Rita Dunn, Kenneth Dunn and Gary E. Price. Tle research sample formed 199 respondents – male and female students of the four-year study of the generally intent grammar school – there were 138 girls and 61 boys in the sample. All age groups were represented in the research sample. We made the correlation analysis of neuroticism, psychoticism and extraversion with each component of the learning styles; to find out the differences between girls´and boys´ learning style we use the Mann-Whitney U Test. We found out that although the relation between Eysenck´s personality dimensions and learning styles exists, it´s not too significant and it´s contingent on sex extensively. We partially proved the differences between girls and boys in their learning styles, but not very significant again. That´s why we suppose that the relation between personality and learning styles is highly individual and it´s no possible to generalize it. Learning styles are so much interindividually different too, that´s why the differences between girls and boys are not substantial.
