Functional aspect of macroinvertebrate communities in tropical and temperate running waters

Abstract:

Společenstva vodních bezobratlých mohou být studovány jak z taxonomického tak i z funkčního hlediska. Funkční strukturu společenstva lze popsat pomocí více biologických vlastností taxonů, které přímo odrážejí adaptace organismů na vnější prostředí. Narozdíl od mírného pásma, jsou znalosti o říční ekologii v neotropické zóně sporé a funkční analýzy společenstev vodních bezobratlých jsou vzácné. Hlavním úkolem této práce bylo tedy studovat a popsat vybrané biologické vlastnosti neotropických taxonů. Tato informace byla následně použita k ověření některých ekologických konceptů v podmínkách neotropických toků jako „River Habitat Templet“ a „River Continuum“ koncept. Navíc bylo studováno, jestli pomocí funkční analýzy společenstev bezobratlých je možné detekovat vliv činnosti člověka na ekologický stav toku tak, jako tomu je nyní v tocích mírného pásma. Bylo popsáno osm biologických vlastností u 82 taxonů: potravní specializace, způsob příjmu potravy, způsob dýchání, maximální velikost těla, flexibilita těla, tvar těla, adaptace na proudění vody, pohyb a přichycení k substrátu. Výsledky mého výzkumu i) poukázaly na některé odlišnosti ve funkční struktuře společenstev neotropického a mírného pásma, ale ii) potvrdily obecnou platnost konceptu „River Habitat Templet“ a iii) konceptu říčního kontinua - „River Continuum Concept“. Navíc iv) bylo jasně prokázáno možné využití funkční struktury společentva pro hodnocení ekologického stavu neotropických toků. Publikované kódy biologických vlastností bezobratlých organismů mohou být použity v budoucích studiích o funkční struktuře a variabilitě společenstev či pro rozvoj metody hodnocení ekologické kvality vod neotropické zóny.

Abstract:

Beside the evaluation of taxonomical composition and structure, macroinvertebrate communities can also be studied in terms of their functional ecology. Ecological functions can be described by a multitude of general biological traits that reflect the adaptation of species to environmental conditions. Compared to the temperate zone, the ecological knowledge of tropical running waters is limited and the functional analyses of macroinvertebrate communities are very scarce. In return, the main objective of this study was to describe several biological traits of neotropical taxa. We subsequently used this information to test some ecological concepts of wide concern, especially the River Habitat Templet and the River Continuum Concept. Moreover we checked if, similarly to temperate running waters, biological traits are able to detect human impacts in environmental conditions of neotropical streams and rivers. Eight biological traits for 82 neotropical taxa have been described: food, feeding habits, respiration, maximal body size, body flexibility, body form, specific adaptation to flow constraints, and mobility and attachment to substrate. Further analyses have i) shown some differences in the functional structure of macroinvertebrate communities between neotropical and temperate zone, but ii) supported the applicability of the River Habitat Templet and iii) the River Continuum Concept in the neotropical zone. Moreover, we have iv) clearly confirmed the usefulness of biological traits for water quality assessment in neotropical streams. Finally, we published the coding of biological traits for neotropical taxa, which can be used in future community analyses of lotic ecosystems in the neotropical zone.
