Společenstva vodních bezobratlých mohou být studovány jak z taxonomického tak i z funkčního hlediska. Funkční strukturu společenstva lze popsat pomocí více biologických vlastností taxonů, které přímo odrážejí adaptace organismů na vnější prostředí.
