Using authentic materials with students at a basic user level of English.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on using authentic materials in English language teaching at a basic user level. The goal of the theoretical part is to review the pertinent literature for defining authentic materials, name various types and sources of authentic materials and consider their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, it describes some possible ways of using authentic materials in the language teaching process, the way of working with them and suggests enabling tasks. The importance of textbook analysis to find the presence of authenticity is emphasized. The practical part is dedicated to the incorporation of authentic materials in English lessons held with students of Střední průmyslová škola stavební a Střední odborná škola stavební a technická in Ústí nad Labem. It offers specimens of tourist information authentic materials together with practical examples of tasks designed to work with them. Data collected from a questionnaire on students' attitudes towards authentic materials usage prove that using authentic materials with students at a basic user level is possible. Students considered these materials as interesting, not demanding to deal with and admitted using such materials in future lessons.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na používání autentických materiálů ve výuce anglického jazyka na úrovni základního uživatele. Cílem teoretické části je nastínit přehled literatury definující pojem autentické materiály, vyjmenovat různé typy a zdroje autentických materiálů společně s jejich výhodami a nevýhodami. Dále popisuje používání autentických materiálů v učebním procesu, způsoby práce s autentickými materiály a navrhuje využití usnadňujících úkolů. Zdůrazněn je význam autenticity učebních materiálů při analýze učebnice. Praktická část je věnována začlenění autentických materiálů do vyučovacích hodin anglického jazyka na Střední průmyslové škole stavební a Střední odborné škole stavební a technické v Ústí nad Labem. Nabízí ukázky autentických materiálů k poskytnutí turistických informací společně s praktickými příklady úkolů navržených pro práci s nimi. Data získaná dotazníkovým šetřením k vyjádření postoje studentů k používání autentických materiálů ve výuce dokazují používání autentických materiálů se studenty na úrovni základního uživatele je možné. Studenti shledali tyto materiály zajímavými, ne obtížnými pro práci a připustili používání těchto materiálu i v budoucím vyučování.
