Title: German mass meeting in Eger - The events of summer 1897 in the context of German national policy in Austria

Abstract:

Směr označovaný za německou národní politiku se v Rakousku vyvíjel od dob tereziánsko-josefínských reforem, jež movitým německým měšťanům daly možnost podílet se na správě a posléze též řízení státu. V průběhu 2. poloviny 19. století se těžiště politické emancipace rakouských Němců od původního hospodářského liberalismu postupně přesunulo k nacionalismu. V Čechách se tento vývoj projevoval v podobě rostoucího česko-německého antagonismu. Chebský tábor lidu, svolaný jako protest proti Badeniho jazykovým nařízením, byl v tomto smyslu především vyjádřením dotvořené německé národní identity v Rakousku.

Abstract:

(English / Deutsch) Abstract: The direction called the German national policy in Austria that was evolved from the time-Theresian Josephine reforms that gave wealthy German burghers the opportunity to participate in the administration and then also management of the state. During the 2nd half of the 19th century the focus of political emancipation of Austrian Germans was gradually shifted from the original economic liberalism to nationalism. In the Czech Republic this development was manifested in the form of a growing Czech-German antagonism. Eger mass meeting invoked as a protest against the Badeni language regulation was in this sence primarily an expression of the completion of German national identity in Austria. /// DE /// Annotation: Die Strömung, die man als deutsche Nationalpolitik bezeichnen kann, entwickelte sich in Österreich seit den Staatsreformen Maria-Theresias und Josephs II, die dem reichen deutschen Bürgertum die Möglichkeit gaben, sich an der Staatsverwaltung und später auch an der Staatsmacht zu beteiligen. Die politische Emanzipation der Deutschen in Österreich hatte ihren Schwerpunkt im wirtschaftlichen Liberalismus, der sich im Laufe der 2. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts allmählich zum Nationalismus wandelte. In Böhmen kam diese Entwicklung in einem gesteigerten tschechisch-deutschen Antagonismus zum Ausdruck. Der deutsche Volkstag in Eger war in diesem Sinne nicht nur ein Protest gegen die Badenischen Sprachenverordnungen, sondern auch ein Ausdruck der reifen deutschen Nationalidentität in Österreich.
