Influence of a size of data files on results of statistical tests

Abstract:

In this bachelor thesis, the influence of the size of the data sets on results of nonparametric statistical tests are assessed. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the theoretical background of statistical hypothesis testing. Besides, some of the nonparametric tests are described in more detail. Furthermore, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, methods of its diagnosis and treatment are also mentioned. The practical part deals with the description of a data set of patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia from the DATOOL-ALL registry. The data were analysed using nonparametric statistical tests from various statistical programs and also with the use of algorithms implemented in the software R. Moreover, the achieved results were also compared with results acquired on simulated data. It was found out that the results obtained using the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney test applied on real-world as well as simulated data vary in different statistical softwares due to the fact that each software uses approximate calculation of the tests for different numbers of subjects. In addition, I ascertained that the SPSS and STATISTICA statistical programs have misleading information in their help regarding approximate calculation of the two statistical tests. Regarding the Kruskal-Wallis test, it is calculated in the same way in all four statistical softwares. Calculated p-values differ only in the number of decimal places.

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se věnuji hodnocení výsledků neparametrických statistických testů v závislosti na velikosti datového souboru. V teoretické části práce je zadefinované teoretické pozadí statistického testování hypotéz a podrobněji jsou rozebrány vybrané neparametrické testy. Dále je popsána akutní lymfoblastická leukémie, způsoby její diagnostiky a léčby. Praktická část se zabývá popisem datového souboru pacientů s akutní lymfoblastickou leukémií, který pochází z registru DATOOL-ALL. Na tato data jsem aplikovala neparametrické statistické testy, které jsem počítala v různých statistických programech a také pomocí algoritmů, které jsem si sama naskriptovala ve statistickém programu R. Následně jsem vytvořila simulovaná data, na nichž jsem počítala neparametrické testy ve stejných programech, které byly použity na analýzu dat o pacientech s akutní lymfoblastickou leukémií. Výsledky testů z obou dat jsem mezi sebou porovanala. Při vyhodnocování jsem zjistila, že se výsledky Wilcoxonova testu a Mannova-Whitneyova liší v různých statistických programech, protože programy aproximují testy při různě velkých počtech subjektů. Navíc jsem zjistila, že statistické programy SPSS a STATISTICA mají v nápovědě u těchto testů špatně uvedenou velikost datového souboru, při které dochází k aproximaci testové statistiky. Kruskalův-Wallisův test je ve všech použitých statistických programech počítán stejně, rozdíl je pouze v přesnosti, s jakou tyto programy uvádějí výsledné p-hodnoty.
