Neoformalist Analysis of Parasite (2019)

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce představila komplexní neoformalistickou analýzu barevné verze filmu Parazit (2019). Cílem bylo dle neoformalistického přístupu, představeného Kristin Thompsonovou v knize Breaking the Glass Armor, určit dominantu snímku. Publikace Umění filmu: Úvod do studia formy a stylu dvojice autorů Kristin Thompsonové a Davida Bordwella byla oporou při analýze narativu a dílčích stylových prvků. Práce přihlédla i ke konceptu kluzké struktury Pabla Utina představeném ve spisu "Sliding Through Genres: The Slippery Structure in South Korean Films" o specifickém užití žánrů ve snímcích nového korejského filmu. Na základě analýzy byl za dominantu určen motiv parazitismu, patrný již ve spojitosti s názvem a tematickou rovinou filmu. V narativu s kluzkou strukturou čerpá z konvenčních postupů a žánrů pro podrývání očekávání. V dílčích stylových složkách vizualizuje motiv infiltrace i za užití nájezdů kamery, přejímáním hudby a koncepcí prostoru.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis presented the complex neoformalistic analysis of the colour version of the film Parasite (2019). Based on the neoformalism approach, presented by Kristin Thompson in her book Breaking the Glass Armor, the aim was to identify a dominant element in the film. Publication Film Art: An Introduction by the pair of authors Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell was used as a support for the analysis of narrative and style. Thesis has taken into account Pablo Utino's theory concept of slippery structure in "Sliding Through Genres: The Slippery Structure in South Korean Films" about specific usage of genres in the New Korean Cinema. The analysis determined the dominant element, which is the motif of parasitism, apparent in the film's title and thematic level. In the narrative it uses slippery structure to undermine expectations of conventional techniques, and genres. In partial formal elements of the style it visualises the motif of infiltration also with camera's movement, assuming music, and conception of the setting.
