Local elites and political-economic conditions in the cities of Moravian Slovakia at the turn of the 19th and 20th century

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce pojednává o ekonomicko-politickém zázemí měst a elit na jihovýchodní Moravě. Zaměřuje se hlavně na maloměsta Uherský Ostroh, Veselí nad Moravou, Uherský Brod a statutární město Uherské Hradiště. Předkládaný text si primárně klade za cíl postihnout a v širších souvislostech vymezit lokální elity, základní vývojové tendence utváření hospodářsko-politického života, zmapovat zázemí, působení a vnitropolitické a kulturní postoje moravských elit na přelomu 19. a 20. století na území jihovýchodní Moravy. Kontextuální rámec a zároveň pojítko disertační práce představují ty politické události, jež měly významný vliv na proměny vnitropolitické tváře Moravy. Výsledky výzkumu hospodaření měst v dané oblasti, ve sledované době spojené s modernizací měst se zaměřením na rychlost a výsledky hospodářského rozvoje, jsou částečně komparovány s vybranými moravskými (Kyjov, Ždár nad Sázavou) a dolnorakouskými maloměsty (Horn, Eggenburg, Retz) s velmi obdobným socioekonomickým zázemím. Těžiště studie spočívá v introspekci klíčových sociálních skupin, které vykonávaly kvalifikované služby a zajišťovaly malovýrobu v hospodářství města a aktivně se podílely na výkonu samosprávy, přičemž důraz je kladen na vůdčí společenské elity jednotlivých vybraných měst.

Abstract:

The presented doctoral thesis deals with economic and political background of towns and their elites in south-east Moravia. It concentrates especially on small towns namely Uherský Ostroh, Veselí nad Moravou, Uherský Brod and statutory town Uherské Hradiště. The primary aim of the text is the analysis and broader-context identification of local elites, explanation of basic developmental tendencies in the formation of economic and political conditions, mapping of environment, activities and domestic policy features and cultural stances of Moravian elites in the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century on the territory of south-east Moravia. The contextual framework of the text is provided by political events with important influence on the reshaping of internal arrangements of Moravian region. The findings of the research concerning the economic developments of the towns in the observed area, which were in the given time period connected with their modernization, are further partially compared with the situation in selected Moravian (Kyjov, Žďár nad Sázavou) and Lower Austrian (Horn, Eggenburg, Retz) small towns which show very similar socioeconomic characteristics with the emphasis on the speed of modernization and economic development. The study focuses on the analysis of the developments of key social groups, which provided qualified services, played major role in the production of the municipal economy and participated actively in the administration and power exercise of the local self-government. The stress has been laid on the leading social elites of individual selected towns.
