Jewish Town in Třebíč. Urbanism and Architecture

Abstract:

Dějiny židovského osídlení na území zprvu samostatné obce Podklášteří úzce souvisí s historií významného benediktinského kláštera, od počátku 17. století pak sídla Valdštejnské vrchnosti a s bohatou minulostí samotné Třebíče. Tři fáze složitého urbanistického vývoje lokality reprezentují nejprve období křesťanské vesnice s řídce usazenými židovskými hospodáři v 15. a 16. století, období postupného zahušťování domovní zástavby s narůstající převahou židovských osídlenců v 17. století a dobu „ghetta“, typického židovského města, ohraničenou lety 1723 až 1849. Výsledkem je unikátní historická městská část, ohraničená na jihu řekou, na severu a západě skalnatými srázy a na východě křesťanskou zástavbou, konkrétně přístupovou cestou k areálu kláštera – zámku. Architektura jednotlivých objektů lokality zahrnuje stavební slohy renesance, baroka a klasicismu; empírový sloh zanechal stopy především na fasádách některých domů. Nejcennějšími stavbami jsou obě synagogy a nejstarší domy s renesančními jádry, postavené před rokem 1650. Vedle stavebních prvků používaných i v křesťanské zástavbě se v třebíčském Židovském městě dochovaly i specifické prvky rituálního původu.

Abstract:

The history of the Jewish settlement, within the area referring to the primarily independent village of Podklášteří, closely relates to the history of the remarkable Benedictine Monastery, from the beginning of 17 century even the seat of the Waldstein nobility, and to the rich history of Třebíč itself. There are three phases of a complex urban development of the area which represents at first the period of the Christian village employing the rarely settled Jewish landlords in 15th and 16th centuries; the period of the gradual thickening of the housing development boasting of the prevailing primacy of the Jewish settlers in 17 century, and the period of the “Ghetto”, the typical Jewish town, between the years 1723 – 1749. The result is the unique historical city part, lined by the river in the south, by the rocky steep hills in the north and west, and in the east by the Christian development, to be precise, by the access paths to the area of the Monastery – Castle. The architecture of the individual objects of the area includes the renaissance, baroque and classicism; the empire left its marks mainly in facades of several houses. The most valuable buildings are both of the synagogues and the oldest houses boasting of the renaissance core, built before 1650. Alongside the structural elements being used also in the Christian development, also the specific parts of the constructions of the ritual origin have been preserved in the Jewish Town of Třebíč, e.g. the spa.
