Depositional environment of sediments of the Pleistocene continental glaciation in the foothill relief of Eastern Sudetes (Jeseníky region)

Abstract:

Abstrakt Severní podhůří horského hřebene Sudet představuje v rámci pleistocenního Severoevropského ledovcového štítu specifické depoziční prostředí. Vyznačuje se těmito charakteristikami: 1) generelní sklon preglaciálního reliéfu proti ledovcovému štítu, 2) značný nárůst nadmořské výšky v porovnání se severnějšími oblastmi Evropy; 3) dynamika reliéfu v regionálním i lokálním měřítku. Těmito znaky se severní podhůří Sudet odlišuje od zbylé části zaledněného území. Severní podhůří Rychlebských hor a Zlatohorské vrchoviny (často označované názvem Jesenicko) na západním okraji Východních Sudet je velmi příkladnou oblastí pro studium ledovcové sedimentace za výše uvedených podmínek. Výsledky výzkumu umožnily definovat hlavní řídící faktor ledovcové sedimentace, objasnění režimu na bázi ledovce a styl pohybu ledovce. Poznatky přispěly k řešení vlivu ledovce na modelaci podhorského reliéfu. Poznatky umožnily interpretovat podmínky vzniku deglaciačních sedimentů. Výzkum ukázal, že okraj ledovcového štítu měl v podhorském reliéfu teplý bazální režim. Ledovec se pohyboval po deformační vrstvě bez výrazného klouzání. Jeho erozní vliv na skalní podloží byl i přes teplý bazální režim minimální. Netvořily se erozní tvary reliéfu typické pro oblasti s intenzivním bazálním klouzáním ledovce. Na měkkém podloží docházelo k procesům rozrývání („ploughing) a zablokování („lodgement“). Preglaciální reliéf byl hlavním řídícím faktorem sedimentace během postupu i ústupu ledovce. Subglaciální glacifluviální a deltové sedimenty vyplňovaly preglaciálně založené deprese. Terminoglaciální výplavové kužely v pozicích koncových morén se tvořily v morfologicky příhodných horských sedlech. Dále od horského hřebene vznikaly proglaciální výplavové plošiny s hlubokými říčními koryty a bez štítové sedimentace. Všechny ledovcové sedimenty studované oblasti jsou hrubozrnné kvůli asimilaci hrubozrnných preglaciálních piedmontních sedimentů.

Abstract:

Abstract The northern foothills of the Sudety mountain ridge represents specific depositional environment within Pleistocene Northern European Ice Sheet. It features these characteristics: 1) generic inclination of preglacial relief toward the ice sheet, 2) considerable increase of altitude compared to northern European regions, 3) dynamics of the relief both on a regional and local scale. Sudety northern foothills are different by these characteristics from other parts of glaciated area. The region of northern foothills of Rychleby Mountains and Zlaté Hory Highlands on western edge of Eastern Sudetes Mts. is exemplary area for a study of glacial sedimentation during conditions mentioned above. Research results allowed to define the main controlling factor of glacial sedimentation, clarification of the regime on the base of the glacier and the style of the movement of the glacier. These findings enabled to interpret the conditions of deglacial sedimentation. The research revealed that the edge of the ice sheet had warm basal regime around foothills relief. The glacier was moving on the deformable bed without significant sliding. Its erosional influence on the bedrock was minimal despite the warm basal regime. Typical erosive forms for areas with intensive basal sliding of the glacier were not formed. Ploughing and lodgement processes occurred on the soft bedrock. Preglacial relief was the main control factor of the sedimentation during the advance and retreat of the glacier. Subglacial, glacifluvial and glacideltaic sediments were filling preglacially originated depressions. Terminoglacial outwash fans in the positions of the end moraines were formed in morphologically convenient mountain passes. Further from the mountain ridge were formed proglacial outwash plains with deep stream channels and without sheetflow sedimentation. All glacial sediments of the study area are coarse grain because of assimilation of coarse grained preglacial piedmont sediments.
