Two queens in the film Mary Queen of Scots: comparative analysis of the acquired accents of two protagonists

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce “Dvě královny ve filmu Marie, královna skotská: Srovnávací analýza nabytých přízvuků dvou protagonistek” zkoumá důslednost realizace nabytých přízvuků dvou hereček ve srovnání s jejich rodnými přízvuky ve stejném filmu. Mnoho filmařů využívá služeb profesionála, takže je běžné najmout si dialektového kouče, který herce naučí nový přízvuk pro filmovou roli. Pro analýzu byly vybrány dva rozhovory, aby se zjistil rodný přízvuk hereček, a pro zkoumání bylo vybráno pět scén každé herečky z filmu. Výsledky analýz jsou uvedeny v tabulkách a grafech. Z výzkumu vyplývá, že rodinné zázemí ovlivňuje rodný přízvuk hereček a že obě mají problém s jedním fonetickým rysem, zejména ve vypjatých emotivních scénách. V případě Australanky Margot Robbie to byla dvojhláska FACE, která byla pro její schopnosti výzvou, a Irka Saoirse Ronan se potýkala se souhláskou past inflection. Naproti tomu Margot Robbie téměř dokonale zvládla souhláskové (T Voicing) a intonační (High Rising Terminal) rysy a Saoirse Ronan excelovala v samohláskách (FOOT GOOSE merger a put-putt as homophones).

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis, “Two Queens in the film Mary Queen of Scots: Comparative Analysis of Acquired Accents of Two Protagonists”, investigates the consistency of realisations of two actresses' acquired accents compared to their native accents in the same film. Many filmmakers use the services of a professional, so hiring a dialect coach to teach the actors the new accent for the film role is typical. Two interviews for analysis were selected to determine the native accents of the actresses, and five scenes from each actress in the film were chosen for examination. The results of the analyses are presented in tables and graphs. The research shows that the family backgrounds influence the native accents of the actresses and that they both struggle with one phonetic feature, especially during tense emotional scenes. In Australian Margot Robbie's case, the FACE diphthong challenged her ability, and Irish Saoirse Ronan struggled with the consonant past inflection. In contrast, Margot Robbie almost perfected the consonant (T Voicing) and intonation (High Rising Terminal) features, and Saoirse Ronan excelled at the vowels (FOOT GOOSE merger and put-putt as homophones).
