Stage fright and horizontal vs vertical individualism

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vztahem mezi trémou a horizontální a vertikální rovinou individualismu. Cílem této práce bylo přijít s kvalifikovaným odhadem směru tohoto vztahu a následně tento odhad ověřit. První hypotézou bylo, že horizontální individualismus a tréma spolu negativně korelují. Tento předpoklad se kvůli nízké korelaci obou konstruktů potvrdit nepodařilo. Bohužel byla také nízká statistická významnost výsledků, a tak nelze o přítomnosti jakéhokoli vztahu činit žádné závěry. Druhá hypotéza zněla, že existuje pozitivní korelace mezi trémou a vertikálním individualismem. Předpoklad se opět nepotvrdil a nízká statistická významnost znemožnila učinit jakýkoliv závěr v této otázce. Třetí hypotézou bylo, že individualismus jako takový nebude v žádném vztahu s trémou. Tento předpoklad sice výsledky podpořily, nicméně šlo opět o velmi statisticky nevýznamné hodnoty, a tudíž i třetí hypotézu musíme označit za nepotvrzenou. Práce si také klade některé výzkumné otázky a sice, zda má věk a pohlaví nějaký vliv na měřené konstrukty. Za zmínku stojí průměrné vyšší skóry u žen na škálách trémy a horizontálního individualismu. Speciálně pro tento výzkum byly sestrojeny a ověřeny škály pro trému, horizontální individualismus a vertikální individualismus. Škály se ukázaly, jako vnitřně konzistentní s možnou výjimkou škály pro horizontální individualismus, jejíž vnitřní konzistence dosáhla Cronbachovy alfy pouhých 0,507. Hlavní přínos práce vidíme v otevření tématu vztahu mezi trémou a individualismem, respektive jeho horizontální a vertikální rovinou a také ve vytvoření vnitřně konzistentních škál pro vertikální individualismus a trému.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the relationship between stage fright and horizontal and vertical individualism. The aim of this work was to make an educated prediction on this relationship and to verify this prediction. The first hypothesis of this paper is, that there is a negative relationship between horizontal individualism and stage fright. This hypothesis was not confirmed, as the correlation between these two construct was very low. These results were also very statistically insignificant and therefore it is not possible to draw any conclusions regarding the relationship of the two constructs. Second hypothesis is, that there will be a positive correlation between vertical individualism and stage fright. Again, the results do not suggest this. Plus, the lack of statistical significance makes it impossible to say anything about that relationship. According to the third hypothesis there is no relationship between individualism itself and stage fright. The results suggest this, but the lack of statistical significance once again ruins any chances of arriving at a conclusion regarding these constructs. This work also raises two questions. First one being, if there is any relationship between age and stage fright. None was found. However, there is not enough statistical significance for us to say, that there is no relationship. The only two relationships discovered in this work is a positive one between female gender and horizontal individualism and stage fright, which answers the second question of this paper, whether there is any relationship between one of the constructs measured and gender. This relationship is a weak one though. Specifically for this thesis a scale for stage fright, vertical individualism and for horizontal individualism was created. The scales have good inner consistency, with the exception of the scale for horizontal individualism, where the Cronbach’s alpha is only 0,507. The main achievements of this work we consider to be opening the debate about the relationship between stage fright and individualism, as well as creating consistent scales for stage fright and vertical individualism.
