Toxic masculinity - a new name or a new reality?

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem toxické maskulinity, jevu, který byl ve veřejném diskurzu poprvé identifikován koncem 80. let 20. století a postupně se stal předmětem akademického zájmu i širší veřejné debaty. Toxická maskulinita je často spojována s mužským fyzickým a sexuálním násilím, misogynií a homofobií a je považována za jednu z příčin těchto sociálních problémů. Práce je zpracována formou přehledové studie a nabízí hlubší pohled na koncept toxické maskulinity, jeho historické kořeny a zkoumá, jak normy a očekávání spojená s mužskou rolí ovlivňují celou společnost. V práci je definován termín gender a z něj vycházející maskulinita a feminita, přiblíží problematiku mužského násilí a koncept krize mužství. Tato bakalářská práce si dává za cíl důkladněji zmapovat významy a funkce tohoto konceptu v sociologické reflexi současné společnosti a identifikovat kontexty, ve kterých bývá aplikován. Práce se pokusí podrobněji prozkoumat koncept toxické maskulinity, analyzovat myšlenky různých autorů působících v této problematice. Dalším cílem práce je nalézt odpověď na otázku, zda je toxická maskulinita novým jevem, nebo zda jde o historicky zakotvený problém, který byl nově pojmenován a reflektován v současnosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis explores the topic of toxic masculinity, a phenomenon that was first identified in public discourse in the late 1980s that has gradually become the subject of academic interest and wider public debate. Toxic masculinity is often associated with male physical and sexual violence, misogyny and homophobia, and is considered one of the causes of these social problems. This thesis is presented in the form of a survey study and offers an in-depth look at the concept of toxic masculinity, its historical roots, and explores how norms and expectations associated with the male role affect society as a whole. The thesis defines the term gender and the resulting masculinity and femininity, and introduces the issue of male violence and the concept of the crisis of masculinity. This bachelor thesis aims to more thoroughly map the meanings and functions of this concept in sociological reflection on contemporary society and to identify the contexts in which it is typically applied. The thesis will attempt to explore the concept of toxic masculinity in greater detail, analyzing the ideas of various authors working on this issue. Another aim of the thesis is to find an answer to the question whether toxic masculinity is a new phenomenon or a historically embedded problem that has been newly named and reflected in the present.
