Exposure to nanoparticles in workplaces and their impact on humans

Abstract:

Problematika nebezpečnosti nanočástic na pracovištích a jejich vliv na zaměstnance je stále vysoce aktuální. Nanočástice vznikají buď přírodní, nebo antropogenní cestou. Pro účely závěrečné práce jsou oblasti zájmu nanočástice vznikající antropogenní činností. Tyto nanočástice lze rozdělit podle původu na cíleně vyráběné - "engineered" a na částice nahodile vznikající během lidské činnosti - "incidental". Osoby na pracovištích pak mohou být vystaveny každé z těchto skupin nanočástic, resp. jejich kombinacím. Nejčastější cestou pro vstup nanočástic do organismu je u profesionální expozice inhalace. Vdechnuté nanočástice mohou způsobit vznik onemocnění dýchací soustavy. Kvůli translokaci nanočástic krevním a lymfatickým oběhem dochází k jejich šíření do dalších tělesných tkání, kde narušují buňky. O tom, jak závažné následky expozice budou, rozhoduje toxicita nanočástic. Cílem diplomové práce je hodnocení expozice nanočásticím na pracovištích se zaměřením na zpracovatelský průmysl, a to pomoci terénních měření v podnicích. Práce je zaměřena na profesionální expozici ve zpracovatelském průmyslu, kde působí 92 % pracovníků všech průmyslových sekcí a dále na nanomateriály vznikající podružně během pracovních procesů. Pro účely hodnocení expozice jsou využity kvantitativní metody, a to přímé kontinuální metody měření. To znamená, že jsou použity přístroje měřící početní či hmotnostní koncentrace v reálném čase. Výslednou hodnotou je počet částic v čase o velikosti 10-1000 nm na cm3, nebo jejich hmotnost v m3 ovzduší. Vzhledem k malým hmotnostem částic nanomateriálů představuje početní koncentrace významnější ukazatel expozice než koncentrace hmotnostní. V návaznosti na provedená měření je diskutován návrh opatření snižujících zdravotní rizika, posilující celkovou úroveň ochrany zdraví při práci zaměstnanců, protože Vhodnou prevencí lze mnoha nežádoucím zdravotním důsledkům předcházet. Tato prevence musí být systematická, musí vycházet ze znalostí existujících zdrojů rizik, toxicity nanomateriálů a možnosti ochrany zdraví člověka před jejich účinky.

Abstract:

The issue of nanoparticle hazards in the workplace and their impact on employees is still highly topical. Nanoparticles are produced either naturally or anthropogenically. For the purposes of the thesis, the fields of interest are nanoparticles arising from anthropogenic activity. These nanoparticles can be categorized by origin into engineered and incidental particles. People in the workplace can then be exposed to each of these groups of nanoparticles, respectively their combinations. The most common way for nanoparticles to enter the body is by professional inhalation exposure. Inhaled nanoparticles can cause respiratory diseases. Due to translocation of nanoparticles through the blood and lymphatic circulation, they spread to other body tissues where they disrupt cells. The gravity of the effects is determined by the toxicity of the nanoparticles. The aim of the diploma thesis is to evaluate exposure to nanoparticles at workplaces with a focus on the manufacturing industry, using field measurements in numerous companies. The work is focused on professional exposure in the manufacturing industry, where 92% of workers in all industrial sections are employed, as well as on nanomaterials arising secondary during the working processes. For the purposes of exposure assessment, quantitative methods are used, namely direct continuous measurement methods. This means that devices measuring real-time numerical and mass concentrations are used. The resulting value is the number of particles over time of the size 10 - 1000 nm per cm3, or their mass in m3 of air. Due to the small masses of nanomaterial particles, numerical concentration is a more significant indicator of exposure than mass concentration. Following the measurements carried out, a proposal of reducing health risks, strengthening the overall level of occupational health protection, is discussed, as many of the undesirable health consequences can be prevented by appropriate prevention. This prevention must be systematic, based on knowledge of existing sources of risk, toxicity of nanomaterials and the possibility of protecting human health from their effects.
