Transformation of US-Cuban relations after F. Castro's demission

Abstract:

Téma této práce je zaměřeno na srovnání dvou období americko-kubánských vztahů, jež jsou spjata s vládou bratrů Fidela a Raúla Castra. Po celou druhou polovinu 20. století byly vzájemné politické a ekonomické vztahy, s výjimkou 70. let, kdy existovaly snahy o normalizaci, paralyzovány oboustrannou neochotou spolu jednat. Největší překážkou byla právě osoba tehdejšího kubánského prezidenta. Po jeho definitivním odstoupení z čela kubánské vlády v roce 2008, se na obou stranách vytvořil prostor pro změnu. Nový směr vzájemných vztahů byl potvrzen v prosinci 2014, kdy prezidenti obou zemí promluvili o nastolení nové éry partnerství, která je od té doby stále rozvíjena, a která by teoreticky měla být završena ukončením veškerých ekonomických sankcí vůči Kubě. Tato práce je tedy zaměřena na analýzu a komparaci zmíněných období a hledání klíčových souvislostí a motivací k současné proměně.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on comparision of two US-Cuban relations eras that are connected with the rule of both Castro's brothers. With the exception of the 1970s, the relations during whole second half of the 20th century were paralyzed by mutual reluctance of both countries. As the biggest obstacle in relation's improvement seemed to be Fidel Castro himself. Space for possible changes has arisen after his resignation from the Cuban government in 2008. The new era of US-Cuban relations was officially confirmed in Decemeber 2014 in both, Cuban and American, presidential speeches. This whole new partnership should be teoretically ended with complete lifting of all economic sanctions against Cuba. Core of this thesis is an analysis and comparation of those eras where we are finding context and motivation for today's changes.
