Social class system of Tokugawa Japan

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o problematice sociálních tříd (systém ši-nó-kó-šó) v předmoderním Japonsku během období Edo. Cílem práce je prozkoumat souvislosti mezi postavením lidí v rámci systému čtyř společenských tříd, jejich postavením v rámci jedné třídy a jejich skutečnou společenskou pozicí. Nejprve jsou postupně představeny čtyři společenské třídy, život lidí, kteří k nim náleželi, a vnitřní společenská hierarchie každé třídy. Následně jsou představeny různé případy, u kterých je dělení do společenských tříd problematické a které se něják vyjímají běžné situaci. Na základě těchto příkladů je v práci nabídnut kritický pohled na starší chápání systému společenských tříd v tokugawském Japonsku, které v něm vidělo neprostupný systém určující společenské postavení lidí v tehdejším Japonsku. Z představených případů a popisu struktury jednotlivých tříd je vyvozován vlastní pohled, přikládající větší význam postavení v hierarchii uvnitř jedné společenské třídy naproti postavení v rámci všech čtyř společenských tříd.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the social classes (shi-nō-kō-shō system) in Japan during the Edo period. My goal is to examine connection between people's place in the four class system, their social status inside their own class and their actual social status. Firstly, I introduce all four social classes, life of the people that belonged to them and the inner social structure of every class. Next, I show various examples where the social division was not very clear and the situation somehow differed from the standard understanding of social classes. On the basis of these examples, I offer a critical opinion on the older view of the social class system of Tokugawa Japan, which viewed the social classes as rigid and defining people's social standing. Based on the shown cases, as well as the description of inner structure of the classes, I conclude my own view of the shi-nō-kō-shō system, focusing more on individual's social position inside their own social class rather than on their position inside the whole hierarchy of four classes.
