The attitude of nurses to the issue of euthanasia

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce pojednává o postoji všeobecných sester k problematice eutanázie, což je v současné době velmi diskutované téma. Cílem práce bylo zmapovat znalosti a postoje všeobecných sester k této problematice a dílčím cílem bylo zjistit, co názor sester formuje. Průzkum byl proveden kvantitativní metodou, formou dotazníkového šetření mezi všeobecnými sestrami vybraných oddělení v Masarykově nemocnici v Ústí nad Labem. Výsledky šetření ukázaly, že většina sester podporuje legalizaci eutanázie, ale zdůrazňují nutnost stanovení podmínek pro provádění eutanázie a také zmiňují obavy z možného zneužití. Sestry prokázaly dobré znalosti o eutanázii, ale v některých oblastech je třeba informace ještě více prohlubovat. Postoje sester jsou ovlivněny jejich věkem, délkou praxe a četností setkávání s pacienty v terminálním stádiu. Závěrem práce je, že místo legalizace eutanázie, by měla být pozornost více směřována na zkvalitnění a lepší dostupnost paliativní péče a péče o umírající.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis discusses the attitudes of general nurses towards euthanasia, which is currently a highly debated topic. The aim of the thesis was to explore the knowledge and attitudes of general nurses regarding euthanasia, with a secondary objective to identify the factors influencing their opinions. The research was conducted using a quantitative method, in the form of a questionnaire survey among general nurses in selected departments of Masaryk Hospital in Ústí nad Labem. The results of the survey showed that the majority of nurses support the legalization of euthanasia, but emphasize the need to establish conditions for performing euthanasia and also mention concerns about possible abuse. Nurses demonstrated good knowledge about euthanasia, but in some areas information needs to be further deepened. Attitudes of nurses are influenced by their age, length of practice, and frequency of encounters with patients in the terminal stage. In conclusion, the thesis suggests that instead of focusing on legalizing euthanasia, attention should be directed more towards improving the quality and accessibility of palliative care and care for the dying.
