Visual Analytics in Cybersecurity Education

Abstract:

Kybernetické hrozby a útoky se v naší společnosti stávají rutinou a praktické tréninky mohou obrátit trend celosvětoého nedostatku expertů s nutnými dovednostmi. Vizuální reprezentace dat a interaktivní techniky ve vzdělávání v kyberbezpečnosti nám mohou pomoci identifikovat a rozpoznat vzorce, podezřelé situace a vztahy, které nemusí být z nezpracovaných dat zřejmé. Tato práce zkoumá, jak propojit principy vizuální analytiky s praktickým vzděláváním a poskytuje tak základ pro další rozvoj a oblasti kyberbezpečnosti. Řešíme tři výzkumné problémy. Nejprve navrhujeme přístupy k mapování procesů a konceptů vzdělávání v oblasti kyberbezpečnosti na modely vizuální analytiky. Za druhé, naším cílem je zlepšit situační povědomí během probíhajících tréninků pro posílení jejich okamžitého efektu pro účastníky. Nakonec navrhujeme přístup k prezentaci shromážděných informací pro zlepšení dopadu, náplně a efektivnější organizaci těchto školení. Náš aplikovaný výzkum přispívá k výuce v oblasti kyberbezpečnosti a k rozvoji interaktivních prostředí pro její praktický výcvik.

Abstract:

Cyber threats and attacks are becoming routine in our society, and practical training can address the global shortage of cybersecurity workers equipped with the necessary skills. The utilization of visual representations and interactive techniques to cybersecurity education can help us identify and recognize patterns, suspicious situations, and relationships that may not be immediately apparent from raw data. Therefore, this thesis explores the methods to merge the principles of visual analytics with hands-on practical education and provide a basis for further development and enhancement of the situation in cybersecurity. We address three research problems. First, we propose approaches to map the processes and concepts of cybersecurity education to visual analytics models. Second, we aim to enhance situational awareness during ongoing training sessions to improve their immediate effect for the participants. Lastly, we introduce the approach to presenting collected information to improve the training impact, enhance future training courses, and help address challenges in the more effective organization of the training sessions. In summary, our applied research contributes to cybersecurity learning and teaching impact and the development of interactive environments for practical training.
