Sweatshops in Bangladesh: Problems connected with the working conditions and the environmental impact of garment factories

Anotace:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá bangladéšským oděvním průmyslem a problémy s ním spojenými. Zaměřuje se především na pracovníky oděvního sektoru, jejich pracovní podmínky a způsoby, jakými vyjadřují nespokojenost s průmyslem. Teoretický rámec práce popisuje industriální jednání dělníků v obecné rovině, odborové organizace a jejich vztah k životnímu prostředí, textilní průmysl, jeho historii a vztah ke konzumerismu, dopad textilního průmyslu na životní prostředí, pracovní podmínky ve sweatshopech, a situaci panující v bangladéšském oděvním průmyslu. Empirická část bakalářské práce má formu případové studie, která se zaměřuje na kolaps budovy Rana Plaza. Cílem této práce je zjistit, zda, a případně jak, se mění pracovní a životní podmínky textilních dělníků na základě jejich industriálního jednání a mobilizace.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is concerned with the garment industry of Bangladesh and the many problems connected with it. It focuses mainly on the workers of the garment sector, their working conditions, and the ways they are expressing dissatisfaction with the industry. The theoretical framework describes the topics of industrial actions of workers in general, trade unions and their relationship with the environment, the textile industry, its history and connection to consumerism, the environmental impact of the textile industry, working conditions in sweatshops, and the situation in the Bangladeshi garment industry. The empirical part of the thesis is in a form of a case study, that focuses on the Rana Plaza building collapse. This thesis aims to find out if and eventually how do the working and living conditions of garment workers change based on their industrial action and mobilization.
