Alpine wetland vegetation of Western Carpathians and Swiss Alps

Abstract:

V Západných Karpatoch a Švajčiarskych Alpách vzniklo viacero štúdií, ktoré sa zaoberali vegetáciou mokradí a jej ekológiou. Prakticky žiadna práca sa však nezameriavala na mokradnú vegetáciu nad hornou hranicou lesa. Keďže sa faktory, ktoré ovplyvňujú variabilitu mokradnej vegetácie, líšia pod a nad hornou hranicou lesa, zameriava sa táto dizertačná práca len na subalpínske a alpínske mokrade, konkrétne na vegetáciu alpínskych pramenísk (trieda Montio-Cardaminetea), slatín (trieda Scheuchzerio-Caricetea fuscae) a vrchovísk (trieda Oxycocco-Sphagnetea) v oboch študovaných územiach. V Článku 1 (Sekulová & Hájek 2009) popisujeme subalpínske spoločenstvá východnej časti národného parku Nízke Tatry v Západných Karpatoch a ekologické faktory, ktoré ovplyvňujú rozšírenie, druhové zloženie a štruktúru jednotlivých rastlinných spoločenstiev. Zdôrazňujeme dôležitosť geomorfológie pre rozšírenie jednotlivých rastlinných spoločenstiev. Článok 2 (Sekulová et al. 2011) predstavuje ucelenú vegetačnú syntézu všetkých typov subalpínskej a alpínskej mokradnej vegetácie v celých Západných Karpatoch, založenú na databázových a z veľkej časti aj na vlastných údajoch. V tomto článku sme rozlíšili štyri asociácie vrchoviskovej vegetácie, štyri asociácie slatinnej vegetácie, päť asociácií vegetácie pramenísk a popísali ich ekologickú charakteristiku. Tri z popisovaných asociácií sa nenachádzajú v najaktuálnejšom prehľade mokradnej vegetácie Slovenska a revidujeme tu syntaxonomické postavenie a nomenklatúru niektorých ďalších asociácií. Článok zároveň popisuje hlavné ekologické gradienty v druhovom zložení v jednotlivých vegetačných triedach a zaoberá sa druhovou bohatosťou cievnatých rastlín a machorastov. Ukazuje, že ekologické gradienty, ktoré ovplyvňujú variabilitu vysokohorskej vegetácie, sa líšia v závislosti od konkrétneho biotopu. V Článku 3 (Sekulová et al., v recenznom konaní) porovnávame vegetáciu rašelinísk nad hranicou lesa v Západných Karpatoch a Švajčiarskych Alpách so zameraním na druhové zloženie a diverzitu cievnatých rastlín a machorastov. V oboch územiach bol hlavným gradientom ovplyvňujúcim druhové zloženie a druhovú bohatosť rašelinísk gradient pH. Pozdĺž neho sme skúmali rozdiely medzi oboma taxonomickými skupinami. Ďalej sme diskutovali vplyv rôzneho zastúpenia vápencového podložia, rôznej celkovej veľkosti území a miestnej flóry na druhovú bohatosť. Článok 4 (Sekulová et al., v recenznom konaní) sa zameriava na alfa, beta a gama diverzitu cievnatých rastlín a machorastov v alpínskych prameniskách. Porovnávali sme tri rôzne územia: Západné Karpaty, Švajčiarske Alpy a Bulharské pohoria. Cieľom bolo posúdiť vplyv lokálnych ekologických faktorov a veľkoškálových biogeografických vplyvov. Na rozdiel od rašelinísk, druhová bohatosť v jednotlivých pohoriach korelovala viac s minerálnou bohatosťou ako s pH. Druhová bohatosť nebola ovplyvnená ani celkovou rozlohou územia a veľkosťou miestnej flóry. Rozdiely vo výsledkoch v jednotlivých územiach sa dali skôr vysvetliť rozdielnym rozšírením vápencového podložia a rôznou históriou. Rozdiely v druhovej bohatosti medzi cievnymi rastlinami a machorastami sme interpretovali na základe rozdielov v schopnosti šírenia a adaptácie.

Abstract:

In recent years, several studies on wetland vegetation and wetland ecology have taken place in the Western Carpathians and Swiss Alps. However, virtually no study has focused in detail on wetland vegetation above the timberline. As major determinants of wetland vegetation variation differ above and below the timberline, this PhD thesis is focused on the alpine wetlands only. The vegetation of alpine springs (Montio-Cardaminetea class), fens (Scheuchzerio-Caricetea fuscae class) and bogs (Oxycocco-Sphagnetea class) of both regions is compared and studied from various points of view. Paper 1 (Sekulová & Hájek 2009) describes subalpine plant communities of the eastern part of the Nízke Tatry National Park in the Western Carpathians, as well as the main ecological factors which influence the general distribution, composition and structure of particular plant communities. The importance of geomorphology for the distribution pattern of particular plant communities is stressed. Paper 2 (Sekulová et al. 2011) presents a synthesis of all alpine wetland vegetation types in the Western Carpathians. Four associations of bog vegetation with Sphagnum peat accumulation, four associations of fen vegetation with fen peat accumulation and five associations of spring vegetation were distinguished and their ecological characteristics were presented. Two of them were not mentioned in the most recent vegetation survey of Slovakia and the syntaxonomical positions of others were revised. The synthesis of collected and published vegetation data for Slovakia and Poland has modified the classification concept of (sub)alpine wetlands in the Western Carpathians. Additionally, the major environmental gradients determining the species composition in particular vegetation classes and species richness patterns of vascular plants and bryophytes are revealed. It was shown that the ecological gradients influencing the floristic composition and species richness of (sub)alpine wetlands are strongly habitat-dependent. Paper 3 (Sekulová et al., submitted) compares the mire vegetation in the alpine zone of the Western Carpathians and Swiss Alps in terms of the variation in floristic composition and diversity patterns. The greatest variation in floristic composition was explained by the acidity-alkalinity gradient in both regions. Along this gradient, two functional groups, vascular plants and bryophytes, are studied separately. The well-known positive correlation between pH/calcium gradient and species richness in natural temperate habitats was reflected interacting with the more common limestone substrate in the Alps. The effects of total mountain area and species pool size were discussed. Paper 4 (Sekulová et al., submitted) focuses on the patterns in alpha, beta and gamma diversity of bryophytes and vascular plants in alpine springs of three contrasting mountain ranges: the Swiss Alps, Bulgarian Mountains and Western Carpathians. The influence of local environmental conditions and large-scale biogeographical effects is considered. The total mineral richness was found to be a better determinant of vascular plant α-diversity than pH in alpine springs. The total alpine area of the mountain massifs seemed to have no effect on diversity patterns; they could rather be explained by the different commonness of limestone bedrock and their different history. The differences in α-diversity between both taxonomic groups were considered to result presumably from the different rates of adaptation processes.
