Process and Product of Translating for the European Union: The Treaty of Lisbon

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with translating for the European Union with concentration on process and final product represented by the Treaty of Lisbon. The aim of this thesis is to find out which procedures are used by the translators of the European Union, also when (and where) are the procedures used and what are the difficulties which these translators may face. Theoretical part describes translating for the European Union in general, from the reason for translating to its products. It also pays attention to the problems in the field of translation terminology and defines selected translation procedures. The empirical part then analyses a corpus of two language varieties of the Treaty of Lisbon. The findings of the analysis show that procedures used for general legal translating can be used also for the tranlsation of treaties.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá překládáním pro Evropskou unii se zaměřením na proces a výsledný produkt v podobě Lisabonské smlouvy. Cílem práce je zjistit, jakými postupy se překladatelé Evropské unie řídí, dále také kdy je užívají a jakým překladatelským problémům mohou čelit. Teoretická část popisuje překládání pro Evropskou unii obecně, od samotného důvodu překládání až po výsledné produkty. Dále se věnuje problematice překladatelské terminologie a definuje vybrané překladatelské postupy. V praktické části je pak analyzován korpus z Lisabonské smlouvy v dvojjazyčném provedení. Zjištění této analýzy ukazují, že pro překlad mezinárodních smluv mohou být aplikovány překladatelské procedury užívané pro obecné právní překladatelství.
