“It’s a story that comes with the land”: Indigenous Land Rights and Environmentalism in Thomas King’s The Back of the Turtle and Tara June Winch’s The Yield

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa zameriava na perspektívy pôdy z pohľadu pôvodných obyvateľov a environmentálnych aktivistov, a porovnáva ich s osadnícko-koloniálnym chápaním pôdy ako komodity. Analytická časť ilustruje odlišné vnímanie týchto troch strán v knihe The Yield od austrálskej autorky Tary June Winch a v knihe The Back of the Turtle od kanadského autora Thomasa Kinga. Cieľom tejto práce je vykresliť alternatívne vízie zmierenia sa, ktoré zahŕňajú západné perspektívy, rovnako ako perspektívy pôvodných obyvateľov Austrálie a Kanady.

Abstract:

This thesis discusses the Indigenous and environmental perspectives on land and contrasts them with the settler-colonial notion of land as a commodity to be exploited. The analytical part exemplifies the diverging perceptions in The Yield by an Aboriginal Australian author Tara June Winch and in The Back of the Turtle by a Canadian author of Cherokee descent Thomas King. The aim of this thesis is to portray the alter/Native visions of Reconciliation that include both the Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives.
