Evaluation in Geography teaching - effect of different test question arrangement on the final score

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá zhodnocením významu řazení testových úloh na výkon žáka. Výzkumný vzorek tvořilo šest tříd osmiletého gymnázia v Praze. V průběhu školního roku byly žákům předány tři testy. Každý test byl vypracován ve třech variantách, dle typu řazení testových úloh. Varianty testů měly úlohy řazeny chronologicky, dle obtížnosti a dle náhody. Každý žák prodělal v průběhu tří testů všechny tři varinaty. Výslednými daty bylo celkové hrubé skóre, kterého žáci v testech dosáhli. Matematicko-statistickou analýzou byla data převedena do frekvenčních tabulek, grafů a diagramů. Srovnáním výsledků získaných za každou třídu a celkový vybraný vzorek bylo s nižší statistickou významností prokázáno, že výkon žáka v testu je ovlivňován řazením testových úloh. Zároveň byla potvrzena hypotéza, že testy s řazením úloh se vzrůstající obtížností mají lepší vliv na úspěšnost žáka, než testy s řazením úloh chronologicky a náhodně. Tato hypotéza byla povrzena pouze pro celý výzkumný vzorek jako celek. Výsledky u konkrétní třídy vykazovaly v některých testech vyšší úspěšnost při řazení úloh chronologicky. Nelze tak absotutně tvrdit, že je prokázaný vztah mezi zvyšující se obtížností úloh v testu a dosaženým výsledkem. Výzkum odhaluje potenciální vliv řazení testových úloh na výsledný výkon žáka. Je však potřeba dalšího výzkumu, především v oblasti vlivu vnitřních determinantů, jako je např. výkonová motivace a kongnitivní styl žáka.

Abstract:

This thesis evaluates the importance of the test tasks distribution on student's performance. The research sample consisted of six classes in an eight year secondary school in Prague. Students passed three tests during school year. Three variants of each test existed first variant had tasks arranged in chronological order as they were taught second variant had questions arranged by increasing difficulty third variant had tasks arranged randomly. Each of the students has passed all three variants during the year. The resulting data is the overall gross score that pupils achieved in the tests. Mathematical and statistical analysis of the data has been visualized using frequency tables, graphs and charts. Our results provide lower statistically significant evidence that pupil performance in the test is influenced by shifting test tasks. We confirmed the hypothesis that tests with tasks arranged with increasing difficulty have better results than other variants. This hypothesis was confirmed only for the whole research sample. Students achieved better results in tests with questions arranged chronologically in some classes. Therefore, we cannot definitely confirm the positive effect of tasks arranged with increasing difficulty on pupil performance. The research reveals the potential impact of test tasks arrangement on the student's resulting performance. The further research focused especially on the influence of internal determinants such as achievement motivation and student's cognitive style is needed for better verification of hypotheses.
