Dog memory

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce má charakter literární rešerše, jejímž cílem bylo pomocí nejaktuálnější vědecké literatury popsat paměť psů. Je obecně známo, že paměť psů je na dobré úrovni. Důkazem nám mohou být například pokusy, kdy byl pes schopen si pamatovat přes tisíc hraček nebo používání nástrojů psy, což svědčí o jejich inteligenci a paměti. Pro bližší pochopení je potřebné vědět, že paměti je více typů a jak se tyto typy paměti liší a co je zde ukládáno. Paměť může být v základu dělena na (a) senzorickou, (b) krátkodobou a (c) dlouhodobou a dlouhodobá paměť dělena na (a) implicitní a (b) explicitní. V dlouhodobé pracovní paměti u psů bylo naznačeno trvání rozpoznávání pachů od 42 dnů až do 233 dnů. Dalším základem pro pochopení paměti psa je nezbytná znalost neuroanatomie paměti, tj. lokalizovat sídla paměti v centrální nervové soustavě, aby mohla být nadále zkoumána a podrobována přísnějším a přesnějším testům. Jednotlivé oblasti psího mozku mající vztah k paměti jsou zejména: mediální temporální lalok (hippokampus a amygdala), mezimozek (thalamus) a bazální přední mozek (mediální septum). Důležité je též pochopit, jak jsou jednotlivé struktury paměti zároveň propojeny a jaká je mezi nimi hierarchie v konsolidaci. Psi jsou z valné většiny využíváni jako pracovní zvířata pro detekci pachů, což je téma úzce spojeno s jejich pamětí. Důkladným prozkoumáním této problematiky by bylo možno lépe pochopit, jak psi pachy vnímají, po jak přesně dlouhou dobu je pes schopen práce a jestli je správně nastavena pracovní kapacita detekovatelných odorantů jednotlivcem. V případě nesrovnalostí by mohl být metodický plán detekčních psů přemodelovaný. A to, jak obecně pro celý druh, tak pro jednotlivce, což by napomohlo zvýšení efektivity jejich práce. Součástí je i krátká podkapitola anatomie čichového mozku. Bylo dokázáno, že čich je schopen ovlivňovat emoce a paměť psů. Zároveň je upozorňováno na důležitost udržovacího tréninku, díky kterému bude mít pes pachy v živé paměti a může je následně zúročit v praxi. Kapacita psí paměti však i nadále výzkumy nebyla zatím objasněna. Výzkum psí paměti může napomoci využití psů v pracovním kontextu a ke zlepšení efektivity obecného výcviku. Odborná instruktáž psovodů ohledně psí paměti by byla ku prospěchu při tréninku psů. Canis Familiaris je používán i jako modelové zvíře pro studium nervových onemocnění jako je například Alzheimerova choroba a jiné patologie lidské paměti. Studium psí paměti může tedy být nápomocno v léčbě a pochopení funkčních změn paměti v humanitární medicíně.

Abstract:

This bachellor’s thesis is a literary research of the latest scientific resources aiming to dog memory. It is generally known that the dog memory is on a good level. Evidences of this may be, for example, experiments where a dog was able to remember over a thousand toys or a dog’s ability to use tools, which testifies to their intelligence and memory. For better understanding, it is necessary to know that there are several types of memory and how these types of memory differ and what is stored there. Memory can be basically divided into (a) sensory, (b) short-term and (c) long-term and the long-term memory is divided into (a) implicit and (b) explicit. Previous studies examining long-term odor memory in dogs have demonstrated durations of odor recognition from 42 days to 233 days. Another basis for understanding dog memory is the necessary knowledge of the neuroanatomy of memory, ie the locating of memory areas in the central nervous system so it can be examined and subjected to more rigorous and accurate tests in the future. The individual areas of the dog’s brain that are related to memory are in particular: the medial temporal lobe (hippocampus and amygdala), the midbrain (thalamus) and the basal forebrain (medial septum). It is also important to understand how the individual memory structures are interconnected to each other and how the hierarchy functions between them in consolidation. Dogs are in general used as working animals for odor detection, which is a topic closely related to their memory. A thorough examination of this issue would make it possible for better understanding how dogs perceive odors, for how long they are able to work accurately and if the working capacity of apparent odorants by the individual is set correctly. In case of discrepancies, the methodological plan of detection dogs could be remodeled for the whole species in general, as well as for individuals, which would help increase the efficiency of their work. A short subchapter on the anatomy of the olfactory brain is also included. Smell has been shown to affect the emotions and memory of dogs. The importance of the maintenance training is pointed out in order to keep the odors in dog’s fresh memory so it can be used in practice. However, memory capacity has still not been clarified. Research of dog memory can help to use dogs in a work context and improve the effectiveness of general training. Professional instruction of dog handlers regarding dog memory would have beneficial effect on training dogs. Canis Familiaris is also used as a model animal for the study of nervous diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and other pathologies of human memory. Thus, studying dog memory can be useful in treating and understanding functional memory changes in humanitarian medicine.
