Gated communities and transformations of current urban landscape

Abstract:

Předložená práce se zabývá fenoménem gated communities, tedy extrémní formou residenční separace vyznačující se fyzickou separací – bránami, zdmi či ploty a právním uspořádáním upravujícím chování residentů v rámci lokality. V současnosti lze tuto zástavbu nalézt téměř po celém světě, jejich význam však více než v množství spočívá v tom, co nám říkají o proměně měst a jejich obyvatel. Cílem této přehledové stati je vymezit gated communities, poukázat na rozmanitou podobu této zástavby, představit konkurenční teorie usilující o vysvětlení jejich vzniku, zhodnotit důsledky jak pro residenty, tak pro širší městskou společnost. Pozornost je věnována také privátní samosprávní povaze těchto lokalit, které lze vnímat jako nové aktéry na poli městské správy a regulace. Fenomén gated communities je zasazen do procesu restrukturalizace globální ekonomiky, rozmachu neoliberální politiky, narůstající fragmentace městského prostoru a proměny městské správy. Gated communities jsou chápány jako součást celkové proměny morfologie města a jsou vztaženy k procesu privatizace veřejného prostoru, k narůstajícímu dohledu nad městským prostorem, k budování „image“ a filtrování městské veřejnosti.

Abstract:

The presented thesis deals with the phenomenon of gated communities, it mean extreme form of residential segregation characterized by physical separation - gates, fences or walls and the legal arrangements governing the behavior of residents within the locality. Currently, these built-up areas can be found almost all over the world, their significance is more than in the quantity, but in what they show us about the transformation of cities and their inhabitants. The aim of this overview is to define gated communities, demonstrate different appearance of the building, present competing theories which are trying to explain their origin, to assess the consequences for residents and the wider urban society. Attention is also given to private self-governing nature of these sites, which may be taken as new actors in the field of urban governance and regulation. The phenomenon of gated communities is put in the process of restructuring the global economy, expansion of neoliberal policies, the increasing fragmentation of urban space and the transformation of urban governance. Gated communities are seen as part of an overall transformation of morphology of cities and are related to the process of privatization of public space, to the increasing surveillance of urban space, to building an "image" and to the filtering of the urban public.
