English Puns and Their Use in English Language Teaching

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na fenomén slovních hříček v anglickém jazyce a jejich následné využití v hodinách anglického jazyka. Práce je zaměřena pragmatickým směrem, v teoretické části je proto zpracováno téma pragmatiky samotné; její historie, typologie, funkce nebo její spojitost s dalšími rozmanitými lingvistickými disciplínami. Osvětleny a popsány jsou taky nejtypičtější termíny z oboru pragmatiky. Teoretická část ve velkém rozsahu rozebírá také tzv. verbal play, tedy hru se slovy v angličtině a následně na slovní hříčky samotné. Je vysvětlen jejich význam, podána je jejich typologie a samotná definice dle několika různých autorů. Praktická část je postavena na lingvistickém rozboru vybraných slovních hříček na základě definovaných termínů a typologií. Didaktická část pak podává rozličné možnosti využití slovních hříček v hodinách anglického jazyka na základní škole formou pracovních listů a popisuje výsledky pokusu práce s nimi mezi vybranou skupinou žáků.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the phenomenon of puns in the English language and their subsequent use in English language classes. The thesis is focused in a pragmatic direction, therefore the topic of pragmatics itself is elaborated in the theoretical part; its history, typology, function or its connection with other diverse linguistic disciplines. The most typical terms from the field of pragmatics are also illuminated and described. The theoretical part also largely analyses the so-called verbal play and the puns themselves. Their meaning is explained, their usage and their typology according to several different authors is given. The practical part is based on the linguistic analysis of selected puns based on defined terms and typologies. The didactic part then presents various possibilities of using puns in English language lessons at primary school in the form of worksheets and describes the results of an attempt to work with them among a selected group of pupils.
