Where they want to live?: The future of the Vietnamese second generation in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Ve své práci se zabývám druhou generací vietnamských migrantů v České republice – konkrétně tím, kde chtějí žít. Teoretická východiska tvoří výpovědi druhé generace migrantů v jiných zemích, kde se primárně zaměřuji na jejich transnacionální chování a motivy k návratu. Ta je pak výchozím materiálem k vlastnímu kvalitativnímu výzkumu, ve kterém provádím tři polostrukturované rozhovory s Vietnamci jeden a půlté a druhé generace na téma transnacionalismu a případných plánů ohledně „návratu“ do Vietnamu. V podrobné analýze rozhovorů ověřuji silný vztah respondentů k rodině, častý kontakt, materiální i sociální pomoc, jasně patrnou pospolitost a starost o příbuzné. Pozoruji, že se respondenti sice dobře orientují ve své vlasti, ale liší se uvažováním a názory. Sami sebe nezařazují striktně ani mezi Čechy, ani Vietnamce, což dokládá i různorodý pohled na tradice, vztahy a kulturu. Lze spatřovat určitý konflikt v jejich uvažování o svém dalším směřování. Sleduji i proměnu motivů k migraci v závislosti na čase a určitou ambivalenci pocitů spojených s plány k případnému návratu. Práce vnáší hlubší náhled na možné motivy českých Vietnamců druhé generace k migraci do vlasti.

Abstract:

This paper concerns the second-generation Vietnamese migrants in the Czech Republic – where they want to live. The theoretical introduction is based on the testimony of the second-generation migrants in other countries, where I focus primarily on their transnational behaviour and motives for return. This is the starting point for my qualitative research, in which I conduct three semi-structured interviews with one-and-a-half and second-generation Vietnamese, on the topic of transnationalism and possible plans for a “return” to Vietnam. In a detailed analysis of the interviews, I verify the respondents' strong relationship with the family, frequent contact, material and social assistance, clearly visible community and care for relatives. I observe that while respondents are well versed in their home country, they differ in thinking and opinions. They do not classify themselves strictly to be Czechs or Vietnamese, as evidenced by the diverse view of traditions, relationships and culture. We can see some conflict in their thinking about their future direction. I also observe the change in motives for migration among time and a certain ambivalence of feelings associated with plans for a possible homeland return. This paper brings extensive insight into possible motives of the second-generation Czech Vietnamese in the matter of a return to their homeland.
