Abstract:

Afroameričtí sportovci jsou často oslavovanými osobnostmi novodobé americké společnosti, ale cesta k jejich současnému postavení nebyla vždy jednoduchá a stále ješte není u konce. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl upozornit na dlouhý a nelehký proces integrace afroamerických sportovců do amerického sportu, a to z několika hledisek. V první řadě jsou v práci uvedeny a vysvětleny pojmy, či sociální koncepty - rasa, příslušnost k etnické a minoritní skupině, předsudky a diskriminace - které se k tématu váží a hrají v integraci černých sportovců velký význam. Na základě těchto pojmů, a toho, jak si je lidé vysvětlují, o těchto jedincích vznikají mýty a stereotypy, které jsou často udržovány při životě jejich častým použitím v médiích, převážně sportovních časopisech jako je Sports Illustrated. Afroameričtí sportovci jsou například často vnímáni jako tak zvaní "přirození atleti", jimž k dominantnímu postavení hned v několika oblíbených amerických sportech napomáhá jejich odlišná biologická stavba těla. Značná část této diplomové práce je také věnována historii integrace Afroameričanů do amerického sportu, jak profesionálního, tak univerzitního. Historický přehled je nezbytný pro uvědomění si souvislostí a důležitých momentů, díky čemuž je pak možné hodnotit současnou situaci a celkový vývoj procesu integrace Afroameričanů do amerického sportu. Tato část práce je rozdělena do několika klíčových období, která poukazují na to, že Afroameričané hráli důležitou roli v americkém sportu již od počátku, a vyzdvihuje jména několika významných afroamerických sportovců. Závěrečná část práce se věnuje vztahu sportovních médií a sportu s důrazem na obraz afroamerických sportovců. Tato část je založena na tematické analýze obálek sportovního časopisu Sports Illustrated, jejímž cílem je dokázat, že média velkou měrou přispívají k vytváření a udržování stereotypů a mýtu o afroamerických sportovcích a tyto mýty blíže představit. Stejně tak se analýza snaží dokázat, že je možné z obálek časopisu vysledovat trend postupné integrace Afroameričanů do amerického sportu, kdy se z malé skupiny černých sportovců v samých začátcích sportu v Americe dnes stala početná skupina často oslavovaných atletů. Afroameričtí sportovci se úspešně zapojili do amerického sportu a hrají jednu z významných rolí v jeho vývoji.

Abstract:

African American athletes represent often celebrated figures in modern American society. However, they have had to overcome many difficulties to reach their contemporary social status, and still, this process has not been finished yet. The aim of this diploma thesis is to give an overview of the long and uneasy process of African American integration in American sport. The thesis deals with several aspects of the process. Firstly, the key terms related to the topic - race, ethnicity, minority group, prejudice and discrimination - are introduced. These terms or social concepts, and the way in which they are understood by general public, contribute to the creation of particular stereotypes and myths about black athletes. These myths are further perpetuated by the media, especially the sporting magazines such as Sport Illustrated. For example, African American athletes are often described as "natural athletes", whose dominance in certain sports popular in the United States is attributed to the biological structure of their bodies. A great amount of attention was also paid to the history of African American integration in American sport, professional as well as college one, since the historical background is essential for better understanding of the whole process of the integration. Moreover, the historical overview and mentioning of the key events related to the integration of African American athletes in American sports enables the author of the thesis to better assess recent development in the overall process of the integration. The part of the thesis dedicated to the history of African American sport is divided into several parts, mapping particular stages of it, highlighting the African American sport pioneers and showing that black athletes have played an important role in American sport since its beginnings. The final part of the thesis describes the relationship between the media and sport, laying emphasis on the image of African American athlete. This part of the thesis is based on an analysis of the covers of Sports Illustrated magazine. The main objective of the analysis was to support the claims about a significant role of the media in creating and perpetuating the myths and stereotypes connected to African American athletes, and introduce them in more detail, as well as to find out whether the depiction of African American athletes on the Sports Illustrated covers corresponds with the trends in their integration to American sports. Obviously, black athletes have successfully integrated American sport and they play one of the key roles in its development.
