The Relationship between Time Perspective and Flow of Facebook Users

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce si kladla za cíl popsat vztahy mezi časovou orientací a fenoménem flow u uživatelů Facebooku. Byly použity dotazníky časové orientace (ZTPI) a flow (FSS – 2). Sběr dat proběhl v Centrálních počitáčových učebnách Masarykovy univerzity. Podmínkou výběru respondentů byla aktuální aktivita na sociální síti Facebook. Výzkumu se účastnilo 214 respondentů (109 žen), jejichž průměrný věk byl 22,53 (sd=3.00, md=22). Respondenti byli v průběhu surfování na Facebooku dotazováni na prožívání fenoménu flow, průměrné délce jeho užívání a na jejich postoj k této sociální síti. Na základě získaných dat nebyly zjištěny žádné statisticky významné mezipohlavní rozdíly, pokud jde o postoj k Facebooku, čas strávený na této sociální síti, fenomén flow a časovou perspektivu. Zřejmě nejzajímavějším zjištěním je, oproti předchozímu očekávání, nalezení záporného vztahu mezi fenoménem flow a časem stráveným na Facebooku. Dalším zajímavým výsledkem je kladný vztah mezi optimální časovou orientací a fenoménem flow. Optimální časová orientace tak představuje jakýsi ochranný faktor proti závislosti na Facebooku a jeho nadměrnému užívání. Dále byl zkoumán i vztah jednotlivých dimenzí fenoménu flow a aktivitou na Facebooku. Nejvyšší skóry byly v tomto případě naměřeny u dimenze "transformace času" a nejnižší u dimenzí "rovnováha mezi požadavky situace a schopnostmi jedince" a "jasné a konkrétní cíle". Výsledky jsou statisticky významné.

Abstract:

The purpose of present work was to describe the relationship between time perspective and flow of Facebook Users. We used questionnaires of time perspective (ZTPI) and flow (FSS – 2). Data collection took place in the Central Computer Rooms, Masaryk University. Condition for the selection of respondents was the current activity on the social network Facebook. The research included 214 respondents (109 women) whose average age was 22.53 (sd = 3.00, md = 22). Respondents were asked about their experience of flow during surfing on Facebook, the average length of use and its attitude toward this social network. Based on the data we did not find statistically significant gender differences in terms of attitude to the Facebook, time spent on this social network, flow phenomenon, nor a time perspective. Probably the most interesting finding is compared with the previous expectations of finding a negative relationship between the flow and time spending on Facebook. Another interesting result is a positive relationship between optimal time perspective and flow. Optimal time perspective thus represents a protective factor against dependence on Facebook and its excessive use. We also studied the relationship of seamless flow dimensions and the activity on Facebook. The highest score were measured in the case of the dimension "transformation of time" and lowest in the dimensions of the "challenge – skill balance" and "clear goals." The results are statistically significant.
