The Subjunctive Mood and its Use in Contemporary English

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce popisuje konjunktiv jako morfologickou kategorii slovesné modality a zaměřuje se na použití tohoto gramatického jevu v současné angličtině. V teoretické části jsou použita korpusová data, která dokládají užití konjunktivu na reálných příkladech. Konjunktiv je zde dále představen jako mluvnická kategorie popisující vztah slovesa a skutečnosti či záměru a vyjadřuje zde jeden z důležitých aspektů anglické gramatiky. V kapitole Corpus findings je uplatňována metoda trigger word/phrase, která umožňuje detekovat jednotlivé konjunktivní fráze a tím jsou zcela explicitně vyjádřeny gramatické vztahy mezi jednotlivými složkami ve větě. Stav tohoto jazykového prostředku je poté diskutován na zjištěných příkladech a jeho relevantnost je zhodnocena v závěru práce.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis describes the subjunctive mood as a morphological category of verbal modality and focuses on the use of this grammatical phenomenon in current English. In the theoretical part, corpus data are used to demonstrate the use of the subjunctive mood on real excerpts. The subjunctive mood is also presented here as a grammatical category describing the relationship between verb and actuality or intention expressing an important aspect of English grammar. In Corpus findings part, the trigger word/phrase method is applied, which allows to detect individual subjunctive phrases, thereby explicitly expressing the grammatical relationships between the components in a sentence. The current state of this language mean is then discussed on the examples identified and its relevance is assessed at the end of the diploma thesis.
