Comparison of creativity with individuals with bipolar affectivity disorder and non-clinic population in context of personality traits

Abstract:

Studie se zaměřuje na porovnání úrovně kreativity u osob s diagnózou bipolární afektivní poruchy (BAP) a kontrolní skupiny, na posouzení vztahu kreativity s osobnostními rysy, pohlavím a věkem. Porovnává také výsledky dosažené v jednotlivých testech kreativity. V dřívějších výzkumech byla souvislost kreativity s bipolární afektivní poruchou vyvrácena a potvrzena pouze pro manickou fázi onemocnění, v níž se zvýrazňují osobnostní rysy extraverze či otevřenost novým zkušenostem a naopak je nižší míra neuroticismu; právě tyto rysy se zdají být vysvětlením vyšší kreativity. Dle dosavadních poznatků nejsou příliš výrazné rozdíly mezi tvořivostí u mužů a žen, pro různé věkové skupiny se výsledky rozcházejí. Jak výzkumy ukazují, jednotlivé sféry kreativity spolu nemusí korelovat. Předkládaná studie má průřezový kvantitativní design. Využit je Urbanův figurální test kreativního myšlení a ASK – Test deduktivního a kreativního myšlení, dále sebeposuzovací Kaufmanova škála doménově specifické kreativity a Dotazník kreativní úspěšnosti. Osobnostní rysy jsou testovány NEO pětifaktorovým osobnostním inventářem. Položky pohlaví a věku zahrnuje úvodní dotazník, obsahující i otázky na téma kreativity a v případě kontrolní skupiny i kontrolující psychiatrickou zátěž, již sleduje i Škála pro diagnostiku bipolárního spektra. Výsledky výzkumu popírají hypotézu, že osoby s BAP jsou kreativnější než osoby bez této diagnózy, naopak v několika testech skóruje lépe kontrolní skupina. Z osobnostních rysů se pro kreativitu ukazuje významným jedině rys otevřenosti novým zkušenostem. Mezi muži a ženami se v některých sférách tvořivosti projevují rozdíly, dle věku vychází nejkreativnější zástupci mladé dospělosti. Korelace mezi jednotlivými testy kreativity vychází různé. Přínosem práce je zejména diskuze nad limity provedeného výzkumu, vyplývající z charakteru zkoumaného onemocnění, charakteru kreativity, z kvantitativního přístupu v psychologii, ale i z krátké časové dotace pro provedení výzkumu. Předkládány jsou návrhy pro vyřešení těchto limitů v dalším zkoumání: longitudinální design pro zachycení všech fází onemocnění, zahrnutí rozhovorů o podobě onemocnění i jeho léčby, sledování kreativity též kvalitativní analýzou polostrukturovaného rozhovoru o kreativitě a analýzou tvůrčích výtvorů.

Abstract:

The study is focused on comparison of the creativity level in people with the bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) diagnosis and a control group, on the assessment of creativity and personality traits, sex and age relations. It also compares the results reached in particular creativity tests. Earlier researches disproved the connection between creativity and BPAD, and this relation has only been affirmed for the manic state of the illness, in which the personality traits of extraversion and openness to experience are accentuated and the rate of neuroticism lowered; these very traits seem to be the explanation of higher creativity. According to present knowledge, there are not noticeable differences between men and women creativity level; for various age groups the outcomes vary. As indicated in other studies, particular spheres of creativity do not have to correlate with each other. The presented study is of cross-sectional quantitative design. Urban’s Figural Test of Creative Thinking, ASK – Deductive and Creative Thinking Test, the self-assessment Kaufman Domains of Creativity Scale and the Questionnaire of Creative Success have been used. The personal traits have been tested with the NEO Five-Factor Inventory. The items gender and age have been included in the initial questionnaire where other questions concerning creativity are presented, and for the control group, there are also questions on psychiatric strain which is tested in Bipolar Spectrum Diagnostic Scale as well. The research results disprove the hypothesis that people with BPAD are more creative than people without the diagnosis; on the contrary, in some tests the control group scores are even better. The only personality trait that seems to be significant for creativity level is openness to experience. Men and women evidence differences in some creativity areas; the most creative group according to age is the young adults group. The correlation between individual creativity tests is various. The benefit of this work is especially its discussion part about the limits of the performed research that result from the character of BPAD, of creativity, from the quantitative methods in psychology and the short time for data collecting. For solving these limits, suggestions are presented: longitudinal design for monitoring all phases of the examined illness, including interviews with the respondents about their illness form and their treatment, applying the qualitative analysis of semi-structured interview about creativity and the creativity works analysis.
