The Negative Experience of Adolescents with Meeting Strangers from the Internet

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá negativní zkušeností adolescentů ze setkání s cizím člověkem z internetu. Výzkum proběhl formou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů na vzorku 16-ti adolescentů ve věku 15-18-ti let, kteří udávali nepříjemnou zkušenost se schůzkou s cizím člověkem z internetu. Cílem mé práce bylo prozkoumat podobu této nepříjemné zkušenosti, faktory, které s ní souvisely a způsoby, jakými se respondenti s negativním zážitkem vyrovnávali. Analýza dat byla provedena metodou zakotvené teorie. Výsledky výzkumu naznačují, že setkání s cizím člověkem z internetu se pojí hlavně s rizikem sexuálního obtěžování a se zklamáním z kontrastu v chování a vzezření daného člověka v online a offline realitě. V prvním případě bylo zjištěno také riziko déletrvajících negativních důsledků. Ve své studii jsem se dále zabývala způsoby, jakými respondenti vnímali a řešili bezpečnostní rizika schůzky. Identifikovala jsem některá ohrožující stereotypní přesvědčení o tom, kdo je a není pro respondenty nebezpečný a zmapovala faktory v chování cizí osoby z internetu, které v respondentech vzbuzovaly důvěru a vedly tak k menší obezřetnosti při plánování schůzky. V souvislosti s negativním zážitkem ze schůzky jsem se zabývala také copingovými strategiemi adolescentů. Zatímco v průběhu schůzky se ukázaly být efektivní strategie orientované na problém, po schůzce byly naopak užitečné především strategie zaměřené na emoce.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the negative experience of adolescents with meeting a stranger from the internet. The research was conducted through semi-structured interviews on a sample of 16 adolescents aged 15-18, who reported unpleasant experience with such a meeting. The goal of my work was to explore the character of this negative experience, the associated factors and the way how respondents coped with this situation. Data analysis was conducted using grounded theory. Research results suggest that the encounter with a stranger from the internet is mainly associated with the risk of sexual harassment and disappointment from the contrast in behavior and appearance of this stranger within online and offline reality. Prolonged negative consequences were also found in the first case. I also discussed ways in which respondents perceive and resolve security risks of the meeting. I identified some threatening stereotypical beliefs about who is and is not dangerous for the respondents and mapped factors in the behavior of a stranger which raised the confidence in respondents and led to less vigilance in planning of the meeting. In connection with the negative experience of the meeting, I also examined the coping strategies of adolescents. During the meeting, problem-oriented strategies proved to be effective. After a meeting, mostly emotion oriented strategies were used to get rid of negative thoughts.
