Gibraltar - British or Spanish? The dispute between Great Britain and Spain about Gibraltar and its relation to the International Politics after World War II

Abstract:

Předmětem diplomové práce „Gibraltar - britský nebo španělský?“ je analýza vývoje sporu o Gibraltar mezi Velkou Británií a Španělskem po 2. světové válce až po současnost (rok 2009) se zaměřením na události, které ovlivňovaly členství obou zemí v mezinárodních či nadnárodních organizacích, a na události, které byly tímto členstvím ovlivněné. Práce poskytuje vysvětlení případu Gibraltaru, snaží se popsat a zhodnotit celkový kontext sporu mezi Velkou Británií a Španělskem (historický, politický, sociální) a získat tak jeho komplexní obraz. Po historickém exkurzu a uvedení do problematiky se další části práce chronologicky věnují souvisejícím událostem ve vztahu Španělska a Velké Británie po 2. světové válce a dopadům tohoto sporu v mezinárodněpolitické rovině. Samostatná kapitola se zabývá tím, jak se odrážela momentální politická situace na ekonomice Gibraltaru, a další kapitola se zaměřuje na postoj obyvatel Španělska a Gibraltaru k této otázce. Závěr práce přináší přehled aktuální situace a její možný budoucí vývoj, zhodnocení problému a ověření stanovených hypotéz.

Abstract:

The goal of the thesis "Gibraltar - British or Spanish?" is the analysis of the evolution of the Gibraltar dispute between Great Britain and Spain after the Second World War to the present (2009), focusing on events that affected the membership of both countries in teh international or supranational organizations, and events that have been affected by the membership. The thesis provides an explanation of the Gibraltar case, trying to describe and evaluate the overall context of the dispute between Great Britain and Spain (historical, political, social) and get the complete picture of it. After the historical introduction and entry into the issue, the next parts of this thesis are chronologically concerned about the related events in relation between Spain and Great Britain after the Second World War and the effects of this dispute to the international polotics. A separate chapter deals with how the current political situation was reflected in the economy of Gibraltar, and another chapter focuses on the position of the citizens of Spain and Gibraltar on this issue. The conclusion provides an overview of the current situation and its possible future development, evaluation of the problem and verification of set hypotheses.
