Klimatické zmeny nespôsobujú len zmeny priemerných teplôt; ale aj väčšiu frekvenciu a intenzitu teplotných extrémov, nazývaných aj vlny horúčav. Tieto extrémne teplotné udalosti majú vážne dôsledky na stav a populačnú dynamiku ektotermných živočíchov, najmä počas embryonálneho štádia, kedy nie sú schopné aktívne uniknúť tepelnému stresu.
