Heavy metals in lake sediments and regolith of deglaciated area of James Ross Island (Antarctica)

Abstract:

V Antarktidě je atmosférický transport hlavním mechanismem přenosu těžkých kovů, kdy jejich koncentrace mohou být výrazně ovlivněny antropogenní činností na jižní polokouli. Velký vliv na uvolňování těžkých kovů z hornin má proces chemického zvětrávání. Disertační práce je věnována těžkým kovům a jejich formě výskytu v rámci Velkého Lachmanova jezera nacházejícího se v severní části ostrova Jamese Rosse. Minerální složení sedimentu bylo stanoveno pomocí práškové rentgenové difrakce (PXRD). U studovaných vzorků bylo dále provedeno: (i) stanovení obsahu hlavních horninotvorných oxidů silikátovou analýzou, (ii) stanovení celkového organického uhlíku (TOC) metodou termické oxidace, (iii) zjištění obsahu stopových prvků, těžkých kovů (Pb, Cr, Zn, Cu, Ni a Co) a metaloidu As v sedimentu i jezerní vodě metodou ICP-MS, (iv) zjištění obsahu těžkých kovů v sedimentech mělkého jezerního profilu metodou ICP-OES a (v) stanovení obsahu hlavních iontů v jezerní vodě kombinací iontové chromatografie, fotometrie a geochemického modelování. Složení jezerního sedimentu bylo porovnáno se složením okolních hornin a s koncentrací sledovaných prvků v jezerní vodě. Speciace jednotlivých těžkých a toxických kovů byla vyjádřena jako aktivita (log a) převažující formy kovu v roztoku při dané hodnotě pH (-log [H3O+]). Míra chemického zvětrávání byla hodnocena podle chemického indexu alterace (CIA) vyjadřujícího přeměnu živců na jílové minerály. Zároveň byl stanoven obsah sekundárních minerálů – zeolitů a jílových minerálů. Z provedeného studia vyplynulo, že vysoký obsah jílových minerálů smektitové skupiny, společně s obsahem organické hmoty a alkalickým pH jezerní vody a sedimentu má hlavní vliv na stabilizaci kationtů těžkých a toxických kovů. Naproti tomu, vliv antropogenní činnosti na koncentraci zkoumaných kovů v jezeře ani na transport kovů formou mořských aerosolů nebyl prokázán. Koncentrace těžkých a toxických kovů v jezerním sedimentu a vodě koreluje se složením hornin vystupujících v severní části ostrova Jamese Rosse.

Abstract:

The atmospheric transport is the main mechanism of the transport of heavy metals in Antarctica. Thus, the concentrations of heavy metals in Antarctica could be significantly affected by anthropogenic activity from the southern hemisphere. Additionally, the process of chemical weathering has a great influence on the release of heavy metals from rocks. This dissertation focuses on heavy metal elements and their occurrence within the Big Lachman lake that is located in the northern part of James Ross Island. The mineral composition of the sediment was analysed by PXRD. Additionally, concentrations of rock-forming oxides and trace elements were determined by silicate analysis and by ICP-MS, respectively, total organic carbon (TOC) was measured by thermal oxidation, selected heavy and toxic metals (Pb, Cr, Zn, Cu, Ni and Co) and metalloid As by ICP-MS, content of heavy metals in sediments of shallow lake profile was analysed by ICP-OES and the content of major ions in lake water by combination of ion chromatography, photometry and geochemical modelling. The composition of lake sediment was compared with composition of the surrounding rocks and also with the content of these elements in the lake water. The speciation form of heavy and toxic metals was expressed as the activity (log a) of the predominant form of metal in water solution at given pH (-log [H3O+]). The chemical weathering rate was evaluated according to the chemical index of alteration (CIA) expressing the conversion of feldspars into clay minerals. The content of secondary minerals – zeolites and clay minerals was also determined. The results achieved in this dissertation provided an evidence that the high content of clay minerals from the smectite group along the content of total organic matter (TOC) and alkaline pH of lake water and sediment had the main influence on the stabilisation of heavy and toxic metal cations. Contrary to that, the effect of anthropogenic activity on the concentration of the studied metals in the lake or on the transport of metals in the form of marine aerosols has not been proven. The concentration of heavy and toxic metals in the lake sediments and water correlates well with the composition of rocks cropping out in the northern part of James Ross Island.
