Art Gallery as a Space of Production and Reproduction of Meaning

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je etnografickým výzkumem pojednávajícím o institucionálních procesech alternativní galerie současného umění v prostředí města Brna. Zabývá se tím, jakými procesy utvářejí aktéři konkrétní galerii umění a jakým způsobem vytváří umělecký status galerie. Výzkum se soustředí na dvě témata, která jsou vzájemně provázaná. V prvé řadě jde o prostor samotný, který práce analyzuje ve vztahu ke konceptu výstavního prostoru jako bílé krychle. Přestože jde o galerii v alternativním prostředí, ukazuje se, že aktéři sahají k osvědčeným výrazovým prostředkům. Ve druhé řadě se práce zabývá tím, jak jsou výstavní projekty do galerie vybírány. Analyticky rozebírá specifickou otevřenou metodu výběru open call v rámci tří charakteristik. Estetika a technika díla odhaluje specifické normy a požadavek na originalitu a uznání v rámci uměleckého světa. Popis díla poukazuje na dělbu práce mezi umělci a teoretiky umění a nakonec životopis umělce rozhoduje o sociálním, kulturním a symbolickém kapitálu. Protože tyto charakteristiky produkují konkrétní aktéři, zasazuje analýza jejich fungování do širší struktury sociálního pole, hegemonie a ideologie uměleckého světa. Výzkum analyzuje vztah mezi aktérem a strukturou a odhaluje, jak aktéři přispívají k budování hodnot daného sociálního pole.

Abstract:

This thesis is ethnographic research focused on institutional processes of alternative contemporary art gallery in the environment of the city of Brno. The thesis analyzes which processes the actors use to shape concrete art gallery and how they create the art gallery status. The research focuses on two topics that are interdependent. First it is the space itself that is analyzed in relation to the concept of the exhibition space as a white cube. Although it is a gallery in an alternative environment, it appears that the actors go back to the tried and tested means of expression. Second, the thesis deals with the selection process of the exhibition projects in the gallery. The text analytically discusses the open call, a specific open method of selection, using three different characteristics. First, the aesthetics and technology reveals specific standards and the requirement for originality and recognition within the art world. Second, the description of the work refers to the division of labour between artists and art theorists. Third, the artist’s biography decides the social, cultural and symbolic capital. Because these characteristics are produced by specific actors, the analysis frames their operation into a broader array of social structure, hegemony and ideology of the art world. The research analyzes the relationship between actor and structure and reveals how actors contribute to building values of the social structure.
