Existencia jednotnej meny v eurozóne nevyhnutne viedla k potrebe zjednotenia menovej politiky členských krajín, a teda k vytvoreniu vlastnej centrálnej banky. Európska centrálna banka predstavuje nadnárodnú inštitúciu s vlastnou právnou subjektivitou, ktorá vznikla v máji 1998.
