Changes in the male role in contemporary society in relation to satisfaction in partner relationships

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce je empiricky ověřit vztah mezi změnami mužské role ve společnosti a partnerskou spokojeností. Dále porovnat rozdíly ve výsledcích mezi skupinou mužů a žen ve fázi mladé a starší dospělosti. Teoretická část je věnována popisu základních témat týkajících se změny mužské role a partnerské spokojenosti. V poslední kapitole popisujeme možný vztah mezi změnami mužské role a spokojeností v partnerském vztahu na základě poznatků dostupných studií týkajících se tohoto tématu. Empirická část zahrnuje kvantitativní výzkum, který vychází z teoretické části. Ve výzkumném vzorku je 248 respondentů, přičemž sledujeme data manželských párů. Zvolili jsme dvě metody měření: Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) a Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI). Zjistili jsme, že muži našeho vzorku vykazují vyšší úroveň androgynie než ženy, přičemž jejich maskulinní složka byla téměř shodná s femininní složkou genderu. Přikláníme se k výsledkům studií podporujících teorii oslabování diferenciace genderových rolí. Zjistili jsme, že míra androgynie partnera je důležitým ukazatelem ovlivňujícím míru partnerské spokojenosti v manželském svazku.

Abstract:

The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to empirically verify the relationship between changes in the male role in society and partner satisfaction. Furthermore, to compare the differences in outcomes between a group of men and women in young and older adulthood. The theoretical part is devoted to the description of the basic topics related to male role change and partner satisfaction. In the last section we describe the possible relationship between male role change and partner satisfaction based on the findings of available studies on this topic. The empirical part includes quantitative research that builds on the theoretical part. The research sample consists of 248 respondents and we observe data from married couples. We choose two measurement methods: the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) and the Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI). We found that the men of our sample exhibit higher levels of androgyny than women, with their masculine component almost identical to the feminine component of gender. We are inclined to accept the results of studies supporting the theory of weakening gender role differentiation. We found that the degree of partner androgyny is an important indicator influencing the degree of partner satisfaction in a marital union.
