Behavioural interactions in population of Turquoise killifish

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá sociálními interakcemi v populacích halančíka tyrkysového (Nothobranchius furzeri). Jedná se o druh krátkověké ryby s anuálním způsobem života. Práce má za cíl popsat rozdíly v projevech mezi pohlavími a ukázat, jaký vliv má rozdílná dostupnost třecího substrátu na chování a reprodukční úspěšnost jedinců. Pro experiment byly použity dva typy nádrží, s odlišnou distribucí třecího substrátu. V polovině nádrží byl substrát nahloučený v jednom rohu, v druhé polovině byl substrát rozptýlen do všech čtyř rohů nádrže. Do každé nádrže byly umístěny ryby obou pohlaví v poměru 1:1. Každý jedinec byl pozorován vždy po dobu jedné minuty a všechny projevy chování, které v tomto intervalu vykonal, byly zaznamenány do protokolu. Nádrže byly umístěny venku, což pomohlo navodit částečně přirozené podmínky. Ukázalo se, že jsou samci aktivnější než samice. Samci si mezi sebou utvořili hierarchii závislou na hmotnosti těla a byli vůči sobě často agresivní. Míra této agrese byla vyšší v nádržích s rozptýleným substrátem. Dominantní samci se častěji třeli a v nádržích s omezeně dostupným substrátem měli i vyšší pravděpodobnost tření do substrátu, protože se u nich projevilo teritoriální chování. Dominantní samci se v nádržích více prosazovali, proto měli i více příležitostí získat samice a častěji se třít. Rozdílná míra agresivity v závislosti na dostupnosti substrátu mohla být způsobena jasněji utvořenou hierarchií v nádržích s nahloučeným substrátem, kde bylo pro dominantního samce snazší substrát uhájit. Omezená dostupnost substrátu mohla být rovněž motivací, aby se dominantní samec začal chovat teritoriálně.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on social interactions in populations of the turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri). It is a short-lived fish species with an annual way of life. The aims of this work are description of intersexual differences in behaviour and test of the effect of different spawning substrate availability on behaviour and reproductive success of individuals. Two treatments were used in the experiment, with different substrate distributions. In half of the tanks, the substrate was placed in one corner. In the other half, the substrate was distributed in all four corners of the tank. Fish of both sexes were placed in each tank in a 1: 1 ratio. Each individual was observed for one minute at a time, and all behaviors exhibited during this interval were recorded in a protocol. The tanks were located outdoor to at least partly induce natural conditions. It has been shown that males are more active than females. Males formed a hierarchy based on body weight and were often aggressive towards each other. The rate of aggression was higher in the tanks with equally distributed substrate. Dominant males spawned more frequently and, in tanks with limited substrate availability, they also had a higher probability of spawning into the substrate, because they performed territorial behavior. Dominant males were more assertive in the tanks, leading to more opportunities to successfully court females and spawn more often. The difference in aggression between treatments may be caused by clearer hierarchy in the tanks with the concentrated substrate, where it was easier for the dominant male to defend the substrate. Limited substrate availability could also be a motivation for the dominant male to behave territorially.
